36% of Americans avoid public spaces due to mass shooting fear

According to this new study that I came across on Fox, 36% of Americans have avoided public spaces because of mass shooting fears.

Is it just me or is that no way to live a life?

The study also found that 2/3 of Americans seem to disapprove of how our elected officials prevent gun violence. Can't really argue with that HAH.

This study is certainly interesting. A lot of the findings reinforce why protecting yourself and open carrying seems pretty smart, especially considering how frequently the American public are in fear of a mass shooting or being a victim. I'd rather be a survivor...

Here's a link to the actual study.

I just don't like crowds (maybe just people) and it's not mass shootings

A filled Time Square on New Years Eve would be defenseless again 100's of cheap drones carrying something nasty.

Open Carry always seems to be a hot topic, I'm for freedom of choice.

I would love to walk the streets of someplace like Oak Park with a Blackhawk strapped to my waist and watch the people run.

That's kind of always my thought. I view arming myself as protection against a person. I'm not sure how well my Glock will handle a tyrannical government with drones and other massive weapons lol.

Also yes, that's why I avoid movies opening night. Not trying to bump elbows and hear someone mouth breathing unfortunately haha

I avoid crowds, because I don't like crowds. Been to a few large concerts over the years, just didn't enjoy them. I enjoy small concerts/venues. As far as movies, anymore, I just wait till they are released to stream and watch it from the comfort of my comfortable chair and can pause the movie when we need potty breaks.

I do most of my shopping online, don't have to take time going to the store, shop when I want, and the items show up in day or so.

Avoiding crowds for me isn't a safety issue, it is just what I prefer. I would much rather go on a float trip with a dozen or so friends than a cruise with a crowd full of strangers. Just my two cents.

Decades of conflict in parts of the world have shown that people with small arms can frustrate the largest and most powerful militaries in the world.  But the point is clear, unconventional attacks (like a rental moving truck plowing into a crowd, etc.) make some defensive choices situationally ineffective.  Larger group of people = larger risk for multiple reasons.

I don't advocate open carry unless you are working in a way that would make concealed carry painful. You are showing your cards to anyone looking.

I don't fear mass shootings.

I do feel like the COVID lockdowns and the big switch to remote work got everyone really comfortable staying home and allowed them to build a lot of mistrust of others. The lingering high crime isn't helping with that.

I only recently started feeling normal again after going to Lollapalooza a few weeks ago. It was great to reset to 2019 mentally. To actually feel normal again and actually let my guard down a bit. Standing with 100k other people, watching Oscar from Chicago take over on drums, was amazing.

I think the mass shootings thing is just an excuse that people use to avoid admitting that they've become hermits.

You must be a young whipper snapper to go to Lolla.  I accompanied my son a few years ago and couldn't believe how much side boob and cheek was out on display.  Most looked way too young for the attire.  I was lucky to make the Metallica show Sunday.  During the show I noticed a couple times a private plane fly over the field on what I thought was an extreme angle.  I'm sure they were trying to see the show from above but couldn't help but think about that plane that crashed in Brazil last week.  As much as we'd like to have control of ourselves at all times, there are moments I need to let my guard down some and enjoy without thought.  Much easier said than done..

I felt old there. Oddly enough it was the people that looked about my age that were the sh**heads, ramming through crowds and stepping on people.

There were some very interesting outfits. Quite a few people wearing thigh high vinyl boots that they must have had to pour the sweat out of when they took them off.

The CPD helicopters were reckless as usual. Their usual antics with treetop flying and hovering 100 feet over the crowd like they never heard about ring vortices / sinking under power.

I would like to see a shaded map of this 36% and which areas are most represented in terms of people avoiding public spaces. For all the scaremongering and breathless news reporting about crime in Chicago, the last set of figures I saw has Chicago at number 20 in the list of large cities for violent crime per capita. That's pretty low considering it's the third largest city in the country. I will say this: I have no worries about going just about anywhere in Chicago and never did when I lived there. I carried when I thought it necessary. I always thought people should be allowed to carry on public transit. Most of the uncomfortable situations I encountered were on the L or a CTA bus.

There is nothing worse than dumb crowds…. In general people can be stupid, then they eventually form a herd…

Most folks I know that avoid large crowds do so not out of a fear of mass shootings but out of an intolerance of idiots and a holes. 🤷🏻‍♂️

YEP!
manners, courtesy, paying attention all go flying out the window and the herds IQ drops 90 points, best option is to find an alternate path.

I naturally don't like crowds.

Terrorists pick soft targets with a lot of people.

Doesn't have to be a mass shooting.

With the present administration refusing to protect our borders and citizens a terrorist attack is a given.

Just a matter of time.

JB and crowd are just about to pass the must remove "offensive" urinals from any unisex bathroom so be prepared for a wet butt.

I've always believed that the only thing lower than a man that chooses to pee in a toilet in a public restroom instead of using the urinal is when that man can't be bothered to lift the seat. I feel bad for anyone with medical issues that require them to sit in men's public restrooms with policies like this.

I was at Metallica on both Friday (traffic nightmare, but I digress) and Sunday.  I saw planes making fly-bys, but I couldn't tell what type of planes they were.  I was curious if they were just entering the O'Hare or Midway landing pattern from that area of the lake.  A bunch of drones popped up to record the shows, too, but I have no idea if they were just people recording the show (good luck with that) or if they were officially sanctioned recordings.

If either the planes or the drones decided to nose-dive into the crowd, nothing any of us could've done about it except pray they hit somewhere else.
