flw Posted September 11, 2019 at 09:47 PM Posted September 11, 2019 at 09:47 PM I did a transfer the other day (first this year). After I did the 4473. w/FOID and DL. Then asked me my age/occupation and the purpose of the firearm. I asked was this just the state or new federal thing. They told me it was just the state of Illinois. So my question is the State of Illinois maintaining a list of gun purchases by owner by age by occupation by purpose ? Who gets to view this database and how long is data held? Sorry if I'm the last to notice this change on the buyer's side of the transaction.
kster Posted September 11, 2019 at 09:50 PM Posted September 11, 2019 at 09:50 PM it's been on the illinois laws for years. only recently brought into light

Reaper Posted September 12, 2019 at 12:19 AM Posted September 12, 2019 at 12:19 AM I've seen that question for years.
RandyP Posted September 12, 2019 at 12:51 AM Posted September 12, 2019 at 12:51 AM As has been mentioned Illinois has required that info for years. I suspect with the new laws and procedures for FFls, everyone is making extra sure to dot their "I's" and cross their "T's" on all paperwork? Especially those FFL's who have not been following that little detail prior?
xrlke Posted September 12, 2019 at 01:42 AM Posted September 12, 2019 at 01:42 AM My response for reason for purchase has always been: because I can. My FFL dealer has always loved it.
ragsbo Posted September 12, 2019 at 03:48 AM Posted September 12, 2019 at 03:48 AM I have never been asked those questions any time I have bought a firearm in this state
GLOCK22 Posted September 12, 2019 at 05:54 AM Posted September 12, 2019 at 05:54 AM I have never been asked those questions any time I have bought a firearm in this stateNeither have I....
mauserme Posted September 12, 2019 at 10:12 AM Posted September 12, 2019 at 10:12 AM Asking occupation and purpose is pretty much the rule in my neck of the woods. I've never been asked age that I can remember - maybe because my date of birth is on my FOID card and is required on the 4473.
SiliconSorcerer Posted September 12, 2019 at 01:53 PM Posted September 12, 2019 at 01:53 PM I have never been asked those questions any time I have bought a firearm in this state Me either and well that's more then a few times.
Quiet Observer Posted September 12, 2019 at 03:12 PM Posted September 12, 2019 at 03:12 PM Asking occupation and purpose is pretty much the rule in my neck of the woods. I've never been asked age that I can remember - maybe because my date of birth is on my FOID card and is required on the 4473. I do not see a problem either. In casual conversation I have told strangers my age (74) and occupation (retired from the Navy and retired RN) if asked. I do not see a reason for the state to ask the reason for the gun purchase, but have no problem with stating the usual reasons: hunting, defense, collecting, etc. No one is going to volunteer that he is going to use it to commit a crime.
Glock23 Posted September 12, 2019 at 03:43 PM Posted September 12, 2019 at 03:43 PM I don't recall age being one of the questions, but they do want your occupation, reason for purchase, and how much you paid.
Yas Posted September 12, 2019 at 03:46 PM Posted September 12, 2019 at 03:46 PM Has the state regulated or stated what would be an incorrect answer for any of the 3 questions? Example: If you answer "Drug Dealer" or "Meat popcycle " as an occupation is it grounds for a refusal?

Nanook Posted September 12, 2019 at 10:01 PM Posted September 12, 2019 at 10:01 PM The questions are just being enforced since the new stuff went into effect. My last two purchases they asked the questions, never had before.
InterestedBystander Posted September 12, 2019 at 11:13 PM Posted September 12, 2019 at 11:13 PM Many were not aware that requirement existed. As the ISP began doing Dealer Certification education I think it got brought up in those sessions so more are aware now.
Bubbacs Posted September 12, 2019 at 11:16 PM Posted September 12, 2019 at 11:16 PM Mega Sports the LGS that everyone loves to hate has been doing this for years. But it probably doesnt matter as no one really buys from there........ But some stores run a tighter ship than most.
carry Posted September 13, 2019 at 01:23 AM Posted September 13, 2019 at 01:23 AM How about "any lawful Illinois use" ... similar to saying what your business is going to do in Illinois when incorporating a business - "any lawful Illinois business".
capnbill Posted September 13, 2019 at 03:25 AM Posted September 13, 2019 at 03:25 AM I did an FFL transfer recently; the new Illinois form also asked for the value of the firearm. Are they looking to tax it or assign a value for "buy back".

Black Flag Posted September 13, 2019 at 02:43 PM Posted September 13, 2019 at 02:43 PM I did an FFL transfer recently; the new Illinois form also asked for the value of the firearm. What new Illinois form is that?
Bubbacs Posted September 13, 2019 at 03:50 PM Posted September 13, 2019 at 03:50 PM Not sure it’s actually a formKind of a sheet of paper printed out with some legal ease and a place at the bottom to answer those questions.I saw no Illinois or federal form number on either one.Reminds me of the copy machine of your drivers license and FOID which is attached to the pile of forms they keep More than likely a cya for dealers who want to NOT have issues with the Febs or Locals
Glock23 Posted September 13, 2019 at 04:43 PM Posted September 13, 2019 at 04:43 PM My FFL just has us write at the top of the ATF 4473... nothing formal about it lol.
Black Flag Posted September 14, 2019 at 12:04 AM Posted September 14, 2019 at 12:04 AM I did an FFL transfer recently; the new Illinois form also asked for the value of the firearm.$USD0.00 < value < $USD∞
