Call to Action 3/1/2019 - Witness Slips Needed

Can We Do This?

It's an easy question to ask, with so much more beneath the surface.

Can we last?

Can we persevere through the hard work?

Can we disregard the naysayers who tell us we can never win?

Can we ignore those who say it won't make a difference?

Can we bring our family and friends into the fold?

Can gun owners come together as a force in Illinois – a force stronger than we are now?

The answer is simpler than the question. The answer is Yes! Yes we can do all of these things, and more!

In our last Action Alert we asked your help opposing three bills in committee: HB892 UUW - Firearm Detection, designed to outlaw firearms made from modern materials; HB2253 Untraceable Firearms, defining things that are not firearms including downloadable code, as actual firearms subject to a new ban; and HB2254 Safe Gun Storage, telling us to pretend DC v Heller is not the law of the land. These same three bills are on the committee schedule again, potentially to be heard of March 5 and March 7.

Joining these bills this week are 6 newly assigned bills, all meant to damage Illinois gun rights to the greatest degree possible.

Some, like “assault weapon” bans and smart gun requirements are self explanatory. Others, HB2653 Firearm Penalties for example, hope to create a chilling effect by enhancing penalties for laws that are seldom enforced now. And then there is HB2883 Firearm Purchase Databse, a bill that defies easy explanation.

Most of us can resist purchasing items we choose not to own. Relieving us of that decision, HB2883 “Provides that the Department of State Police shall create and maintain a database that a person can voluntarily apply to in order to be barred from purchasing a firearm.”, a decision more easily made by simply not purchasing a firearm.

Can we do this?

Can we fight these bills – is there a chance we can keep them in committee?

The answer is Yes.

Join us in opposing these bill by filing the witness slips below.

Regarding the links going to click.icptrack instead of the ilga site...it is new I believe but is that intentional e.g. trying to see how many hits you are getting on the links from the post?

It's the method we used to post the last couple alerts. We set up the email alert first - part of that process involves sending ourselves the email to check the format, make sure the links are correct, etc. Then we copy it into a forum post. Our email service does provide tracking so we can see which links in the email are being clicked. Since we copied the alert from an email the tracking is part of the forum alert too.

Prior to that we were formatting two different alerts which entailed spell checking twice, checking twice as many links, rich text for one versus bb code for the other, etc. The new method is just a way to save some time.

Does anyone know much about the Republican that Sponsored HB2653 Firearm Penalties?

Because, I wonder if there is more than meets the eyes. It essentially increases the minimum level from misdemeanors to felonies for brandishing, having a gun illegally outside the house (if no CCL), or in a vehicle. On the face of it, this seems like simply going after gun owners.

But, I wonder. One of the issues with stopping gun and gang violence in Chicago, is that these gun charges get pleaded from misdemeanor, to stuff that doesn't trigger a BC failure,. This is one reason there are so many repeat offenders. But if they start as felonies, not sure they can be pleaded below a misdemeanor.

I don’t know much about him. He is a freshman with no history. It’s also interesting that so far he has no cosponsors signe up. I’m not sure what to make if it..
