I did Todd's bug-out-bag exercise and to keep costs down I got a pretty cheap mutli-tool to throw in the bag, which I'm not sure is even usable. I think Todd bought a Home-Depot Husky multi-tool which got some pretty bad reviews. I've been thinking of getting a better multi-tool but I've also been wondering what other people are doing.

My primary BOB is my pockets... My Leatherman Flair is goes with me everywhere, and I have two spares. The corkscrew and cocktail fork actually come in very handy every so often.

I have a bunch of other multi tools I have collected... All stashed in appropriate places.

Original Leatherman PST and an original Victorinox ALOX Swiss Army Knife. (The Swiss make such great weapons that they never have had to fight a war. Everyone is afraid to go up against them...).

I like them for EDC use because they do everything I NEED them to do in a pinch and are yet very pocketable. Remember the old saying, you use a pistol to fight your way to your rifle? I look at these tools as a desperate measure to fight my way to a real knife/screwdriver/pliers, etc.

I actually need to get myself a top-of-the-line multitool this year. I've been using some cheap ones that I got from American Science & Surplus 10 years ago for 5 bucks, and they've worked fine, but I really need to upgrade to an end-all-be-all model, preferably something with a bit kit and such. I'm looking at Leatherman and Gerber ones, and I have no problem going well over a hundred bucks for one.

I'd love some recommendations, as well.

I have one from Eddie Bauer and one from Stanley tools. Both are cheap, but for light duty stuff seem to be functional. A multi tool isn't ever going to be the best at anything, which makes an expensive one a hard to justify purchase. I have real tools that are far better at an intended function. I don't have a bug out bag so much as a get home bag. Since the point of a get home bag is to get home, I don't anticipate having to build a shack in the woods with a multi tool.

For EDC I always have a Benchmade knife on me, and a flashlight and those two things get frequent use. I'm always near a Swiss Army knife (car, desk, house) and that sees a bit of use for manicure stuff once or twice a week. The multi tools just sit in the bag.

I'm embarrassed now at what I purchased. It's easier to say China-Mart than to actually admit I bought a Sheffield. The main reason I purchased the el-cheapo Sheffield though was that I was trying to stay under 200 bucks and I didn't prioritize the multi-tool.

Its so crappy I'm wondering if it can even be used at all or if it will break on first use. If that's the case then its just taking up space and adding dead weight to my pack.

A couple by Leatherman (the original and a later one), a couple of cheap knockoffs, one Gerber and one by SOG.

The SOG I carry, the Leathermans I pack, the knockoffs are trade bait and the Gerber an emergency reserve.

I need to get a better multi tool. I have an el cheapo from Lowe's I think. It really becomes apparent how crappy it is when you have to use it.

Time to add something else to my amazon wishlist lol.

My first Leatherman Wave, over ten years ago, had a problem with a sticking tool release. The company replaced it with a new one, no questions asked. The quality of the steel seems pretty good also, having put some serious leverage on the driver bits over the years.

Wow, that right there is a huge selling point. I've had my share of cheap Chinese crap multitools over the years and actually had one where the screw I was trying to remove, stripped the screwdriver LOL. I looked at it and couldn't believe what I was seeing. I'm not sure what kind of metal they used, but obviously it wasn't a good one.

Get a Leatherman Surge with the bit kit and extender or a Leatherman Supertool 300 and pair it with the Micra.

I just did a comparison with the Charge TTI, Charge ALX, and Surge, and from what I am seeing the Surge is the best combo for the money, along with that bit kit and extender you mentioned. I think I will be getting that.

Thanks!
