Did the definition of gang member change when I wasn't looking? Maybe just in Elgin?

Contrary to the prevailing social media opinion, common Elgin residents having a heated disagreement are just as likely as gang warfare to be the source of the city's gun violence.

While 2023 stats are incomplete, Elgin Police Chief Ana Lalley said last week on her radio show that recent years indicate gangs are responsible for only half of the shots fired in the city.

If you’ve ever lived in or around Elgin you understand the situation. Its a mini Chicago, with all that entails.

Born and raised in Elgin[still there],It's nowhere near "mini Chicago."  Does it have problems? Sure, just like a lot of cities with 100,000 + populations. JMO

I do not understand your reason for posting. She is not denying that there are gang related shootings in Elgin.

Are you claiming that all the shootings in Elgin are gang related?

Nah, but tell me it's not more than half...

and I thought it was a stupid thing to say, out loud, on the record.

And the 🐮 💩 is exposed.

It's not just in a certain area of Elgin," Lalley said. "There's not a common theme. It's a lot of interpersonal violence or conflict. Sometimes there's a gang relationship; sometimes there's not. In some instances, we won't know the motivation until we make an arrest. But we can't say this is all attributable to gang violence."

Buried in each Daily Karen article is some of the truth,

So sometimes it's gangs, but we don't know until we make an arrest, and they don't ALWAYS make an arrest. So to say it's not all or mostly gang related can't be true.

Officers made arrests or issued warrants in eight of the 29 shots fired cases so far this year. Twelve of the 29 are still under investigation. One incident involved no criminal aspect. The other eight cases are unsolved. Of those cases, and going off of recent years, Lalley said there is about a 50/50 split between gunshots involving gangs versus some other source.

That 50/50 math doesn't add up when you still have open investigations and no clue on some of the others.

But then again MATH is racist these days so.

Maybe she is priming for some excuse to disarm the law-abiding.

Remember the kerfuffle over the new small range...

Uh the “politicians” don’t need an “excuse”, they do what they want, pass bills with names using that are not even close, do it in the middle of the night, don’t play by the rules/laws listed, heck they don’t even need t be present, just have a staffer vote or your buddy in your party while your ‘At church’.

Screw you plebs!

We agree to disagree my friend.

Went to school there in the 60s, married and lived there for awhile.

Had a retail establishment downtown

during the transition to a mall which killed the area and only partly recovered with the river boat.

A close relative was another area police chief. What I said above was the general consensus of many in

law enforcements and was what I believe from experience.

How can she state this?:

When these are the stats she has to go from:

She is talking about a trend over the last few years, not just 2023.

"While 2023 stats are incomplete, Elgin Police Chief Ana Lalley said last week on her radio show that recent years indicate gangs are responsible for only half of the shots fired in the city".

As far as 2023 goes, they can still have enough information to tell if a shooting is gang related, but not enough information to make an arrest. Among the many possibilities are the following. The victim could be a gang member, but the shooter is unknown. Two strangers, with no known gang affiliation, get into an argument in the park and shooting starts and the shooter flees and cannot be found. A bullet goes through a window of a building, but there are no gang connections.

Arrest the wrong person without sufficient evidence, there may be a lawsuit.

She is not denying that there are shootings in the city. She is saying that people may have a misconception of the source.
