New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo called Tuesday for national gun control legislation to try to stem violence nationwide, one day after a top lawyer in his administration was shot and critically wounded early Monday morning.

I hope is lawyer gets better, but from what I've read There were 8 to 10 shots (withing Cuomo's magazine limit), it wasn't from an sporting rifle, but a handgun. It was in New York City with VERY STRICT gun laws, and It was most likely an illegal gun, and the Lawyer probably wasn't allowed a conceal carry permit in NYC. (although I don't know for sure).

I assume more information will come out.

From the NY Times article:

"A dispute, possibly between rival gangs, prompted the shootout, police officials said, endangering the lives of hundreds of innocent bystanders."

So, how do laws stop this? Gang members, who are generally adept at breaking laws anyway, broke more laws. Hmm...

You reap what you sow. If you want to give certain people protected status and then keep the cycles going with public funding then thats what you get.

They should enjoy the fruits of their hard labors.

You have a point NYC has went downhill quick since they elected a self hating socialist.

Cuomo will be looking to pass new laws before breakfast is complete.

He is spending the morning on TV promoting a national gun law (which has yet to be defined or examined for logic).

Yup sounds good, lets pass it.

Can't imagine anyone associated with Cuomo or Empire State government winning a popularity or fairness contest.

New York State is permanently geared to trample peoples' rights. Progressive tax and spend polices drove my hometown's two primary industries to the Carolinas where they thrived. And the state acted heartlessly when taking my grandfather's lake property (that he built with his own hands) through eminent domain for an unwanted project that environmentalists stalled for ten years - ten years we could not use the property. No one with an education or desire to be left alone stayed there - since the 1960's.

We have to pass the bill so that you can find out what is in it...

X2 on this happening at 3:40 a.m. What the heck kind of parade is going on at that hour?

A quote from the mayor-

“Here in this city,” Mr. de Blasio said, “we will fight every day, use every tool we have to deprive criminals of guns, but we need a bigger change in this nation to finally ensure that guns don’t flow freely across state borders and into the wrong hands.”

Two rival gangs. There was also a stabbing reported.

I'll have a try to ammend Mr. Bills statement to more accurate portray the truth.

"Here in NYC, we will fight everyday, enforcing every law we have on the books to prosecute gang members to the fullest extent who commit felonies, but we need a change in this administration to finally ensure that gangs and violent criminals aren't released from incarceration to flow freely across state borders and cause further harm."

I'll take a stab at it.

"Here in NYC we fight everyday to advance the teachings of Marx, Engels, Lenin, Stalin, and Mao. who taught us that an armed proletariat is a free proletariat, and has no need for the jackboot of government on its throat."

Let me get this straight...

Deblas(hole) ended Stop n' Frisk.

NY liberal Lawyer was shot by a gang banger.

Its deblas(hole)'s fault for being lax on gangbangers.

Errr. wait....Take away guns for law abiding citizens

I'm sorry for his biological family....but not for his political family. They reap what they sow...

Liberalism CONTINUES to be a mental illness.

Yep. Liberal attorney who helps liberal mayor come up with legal rationales to deprive law abiding citizens of their constitutional rights gets shot with an illegal gun fired by a criminal.

The death aside, I can't decide whether this is irony or poetic justice ... or both. :D

Wait... A lawyer got shot in the head? I'm pretty sure there is a lawyer joke in there somewhere...

I think it would involve Swiss Cheese.

and the Lawyer probably wasn't allowed a conceal carry permit in NYC. (although I don't know for sure).

I'm sure he could get a permit. "May issue" = crony carry.

The lawyer who got shot came from humble beginnings and made something of himself. It is a profound tragedy that he was injured, and I hope the best for his recovery.

Most of the guns used by street gangsters were purchased legally, in state or elsewhere, then sold illegally on the street. That's already breaking several laws which could put the seller in jail for years. They're hard to catch because they operate within a tight knit circle of trusted associates, which makes the practice hard to infiltrate or detect.

More laws aren't going to solve the problem, just make it harder on law-abiding citizens. What would help is to increase the risk of carrying an illegal weapon on the streets. Something like "stop and frisk".

The only solution to such problems is to allow people to defend themselves. The goverment cannot do a single thing to mitigate gang activity, stop/reduce crime, or make any community safer. A self reliant, personally responsible society will choke out the weeds, and destroy fertile environment where such depravity flourishes. When there are no more victims, there will be no more predators.

Somewhat off topic but related to folks defending themselves in NYC.

I'm watching an episode of "The Strain" last week (vampire zombies, bla bla bla) and one of the lead characters mentioned that he needs a sniper rifle and where can he get one. His buddy replies "In New York? (laughs) You gotta know someone whoknows someone." So they go down to the loading docks and find a black marketeer who gives him a WW2 era Mosin Nagant.

Later, the mayor rides thru the neighborhoods in the back of a truck using a megaphone to call the neighbors to arms in order to defend the city of Red Hook Ny from the creatures. A mob of people arrive for battle armed with brooms, shovels and axe handles. I thought "Sweet Joseph and spray cheese, I know it is just a tv show, but has gun control really gotten that bad there?"

So you think it's OK to ignore the 4th Amendment but you don't think the 2nd would be similarly ignored once the precedent is established that the Constitution is just a guideline and not the law? You get to pick and choose which parts to follow and which can be ignored?

chislinger you nailed it .What the Anti's do not get nor understand is that if we "Gun Nuts" lose the 2nd , that makes the rest of he Constitution vulnerable . Lose 1 and the rest will fall too . Such short sided idiots
