Chicago to stop using controversial ShotSpotter technology, and parent company’s stock tumbles

I would think that the stock of anything that Chicago rejects would skyrocket.

One of the big problems is that it is racist.

"First, as the MacArthur Justice Center details, ShotSpotter is deployed overwhelmingly in communities of color, which already disproportionately bear the brunt of a heavy police presence. The police say they pick neighborhoods for deployment based on where the most shootings are, but there are several problems with that:  . . ."

Apparently, it would be better to place the ShotSpotters in downstate corn and soybean fields.

Why would you want police where the crime is?

Well cricky! Down around my way in rural Southern Illinois (surrounded by corn and soybean fields) it’d be going off every darn day!!! 🤣

Thanks SIL, scathing commentary and pretty sad. I heard an interesting caller this morning on the radio. He talked about how socialism snuck up on the world around WW2 and now, with social media and sites like this, we very clearly see it coming but are not doing anything about it.

I can't recall who I heard say something similar recently but they were comparing us to France and similar EU countries.  They went on how far we have come just in the last few years all due to the woke bull **** we now put up with.  No one wants to go to work but instead live off .gov teets.  Everyone wants everything with nothing in return.  I believe if the founders were alive today, guns would already be cold due to them handling the idiocy a long time ago.

I believe they would have been against this kind of mass surveillance. They would have demanded that the people from these neighborhoods step up and not tolerate this garbage. They believed in the right to self defense so I doubt "it's dangerous to speak out" would have carried much weight with them.

NBC Chicago is reporting that ShotSpotter has rejected Chicago's request for a 6-month extension to the contract until after the DNC convention in August.

I guess that's what happens when you make a public statement about dropping a contract. The other party decides not to cut you any slack.

Apparently the contract ends later this month.

$49 million for 6 months? He must be the best negotiator ever. I'm going to just leave this here:

Quote

While Brandon Johnson was vowing on the campaign trail to end the city’s contract with ShotSpotter, Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s administration had already quietly extended the city’s multimillion-dollar contract to use the controversial gunshot detection software. The city’s initial three-year, $33 million contract with California-based ShotSpotter started in August 2018 and was extended for two more years in December 2020 without public notice and long before the initial deal was slated to end. Records show the contract was set to expire Aug. 19, but a ShotSpotter spokesperson said it was extended in October and will remain in effect until at least Feb. 16
