Update - Review of vote on HB997

Was at the Capitol all day yesterday and met with Rep. Phelps this morning. As strange as this may sound, we were very close to passing HB997 yesterday. Going into the debate we had 72+ votes.

Two things happened - we had several reps from the Chicago area ready to vote with us and then a senator from Chicago began circulating around the House floor just before the vote, taking notes on the debate and mentioning a bill coming out in the Senate in the next few weeks. Some of our Chicago votes then decided to wait and see what comes out of the Senate.

The other thing that happened is, due to a snafu with all the gazillion different drafts of 997, there were errors in the draft that came up for a vote. A few votes fell off because of that.

One thing we noticed throughout the Capitol is that there is no sense of urgency to pass a bill. We heard several times that "it's still early, plenty of time, we have until May 31st."

Our plan is to defeat any bad bill coming out of the Senate, fix the errors in 997, and come back for another vote. There is no discussion of any kind of carve out for Chicago or Cook Co.

Everyone needs to read Molly's post and rally around the flag.

We absolutely have to come together as one voice to get this done.

The fragmenting here that occurred after the vote last night was disheartening to me.

We will only win this one way and that is as united together to stand up to those who are attempting to rule us as subjects, not citizens.

TODAY is the 237th anniversary of the Battle at Lexington and Concord.

That's when our forefathers banded together to stand up to tyranny. Can we do anything less than what they did?

I urge each of you to put your differences aside and come together solidly behind Todd, Illinois Carry and the ISRA.

Thanks for the update.

If we give up the fight now, I think we will have blood on our hands too if court carry kicks in. That being said, no more compromises!

I don't buy that. Blood is on the hands of those that disarm the law abiding. Court carry would result in a lot of legal mess, but we have to do what we must to restore our rights. I'm starting to think this whole licensure process is completely invalid, considering that we are talking about a constitutional right. It is our responsibility as individuals to train, and train those around us. This is not something to be left up to legislators in Illinois (especially considering their record so far).

I'll do what I must to legally carry when it comes down to it, but I sure as heck won't like it.

Molly,

are we expected by those to "give" any more. I know yesterday seemed like a complete one sided negotiation to many here. And after all that giving that a senator could walk around and basically screw up the political give and take is somewhat sickening.

Obviously there were some changes yesterday that folks didnt like here at IC. BUT we could choke them down like a nasty Brussels sprout to get to a shall issue state wide bill...

That said if training gets longer, or chicago gets a carve out, or the fees get higher, or the number of guns is limited, or , or, or...

People are starting to wonder why give....

Can we not create a list of "We put this in for person X and he still voted NO"... Now we yank it back OUT!

I figured it was something like that with the votes because of the compromises, sorta.

Also Thanks very much, I've tried to remain silent and I don't want to argue. But few people wouldn't mind throwing people behind enemy lines under the bus. We've worked too hard to settle for any less, the court ruling only helped insure that cook and Chicago would have pre-emption. There are so many dedicated people in cook/chicago who are on this forum that try very hard to spread the word for Illinois Carry.

No man left behind guys. We have to stick together.

I don't think they're attempting to, they have been for years and still are. As long as the people of Chicago/Cook keep electing these holier than thou hacks the entire state is going to continue to be run roughshod over

Thanks Molly for the update.

I would like to thank everyone that has worked so hard to make this bill acceptable enough to get the required votes. After being p***** off last night and very disheartened with the vote count, I can say this.Keep forging ahead with the bill. But I personally along with others feel that any compromising from this point on should not even be considered.

We have given too much already to get the required votes needed.I think it's time we say here is the bill no more compromises or changes. PERIOD
