What’s going on?

Short answer we don’t know all the details.

On Friday afternoon I heard about the special order. Then started to work on what was happening. Through emails and other contacts I learned that the Speaker is planning a flat out fight on right to carry on the floor of the House.

Amendments will be offered to his shell bill, HB-1155. I expect to see a dozen or more amendments from anti-gunner for everything from delaying the implementation until 100% of the mental health records are in to New York may issue, to no mass transit etc. etc. Let your imagination run wild. You can figure it out.

We are working on our own amendment. But we don’t know the order of things or how it is all going to proceed. Not to mention we now have a snow storm heading for Springfield Monday night and Tuesday.

WE need to have all of our supporters there and doing two things:

1. Oppose any amendment not supported by NRA/ISRA/Illinois Carry

2. Support only NRA/ISRA/Illinois Carry amendment.

We didn’t dream this up, but we have to play the game. It shows me that we are winning the battle and if our bill hit the floor, it would pass. Why else all this other hoopla and trying to gin up fear about carrying at street festivals, and parks and things like that. They don’t like it, they are losing, and are in a dead panic.

Right now I think Speaker Madigan is agnostic about this. He knows they have to pass a law. I believe he wants this off his plate. It wants it out of his hair and done. So to appease the City, the Mayor and others, he is going to let them have their little tantrum in committees, he is going to let them attempt their amendments.

I have also nee told he is not twisting arms on any of this. He is just a referee in the game. This is why I have been harping on a simple phrase: NO BAD BILL. NO BAD AMENDMENTS. We can control the debate by the fact that we should have a 60 vote majority. If we hold that, we win. It only takes 60 votes to adopt an amendment. It will take 71 to pass our bill with preemption. Once that is the only bill left on the table, if we get to that point, I predict we will prevail.

The funny thing is that the Senate president has been trying for a grand bargain. And talks were to begin on the carry bill this week. Looks like he is a day late and a dollar short again. We offered to move this along, but he stalled and hemmed and hawed.

If you want to come to the capitol on Tuesday, feel free. I don’t know what things are going to be like or how they are going to proceed. But it sure will be interesting.

In the meantime, call your reps and tell them our message: NO BAD BILL. NO BAD AMENDMENTS. My anticipation is that Representative Phelps will carry our amendment. Everything else is a NO VOTE.

It’s Hammer Time.

At the end of the Chicago hearing, right after Todd was done with questions. The lady said the next hearings were in Springfield on assault weapons ban... Does this mean it is all going to be RTC?

Todd,

Since I have not had the opportunity sir, to meet you in person, I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude for all you have done....not just for myself, or my wife.....but for my children, whom stand to gain from your efforts (and the others who stand with you) something that I would not have had have dared hope for just five years ago. You have helped to protct them when I will not be there to do so, and that means a lot to me.

Guys of critical importance when you call your rep, call both the House office phone number and the district office. Talk to people at both places, not just one or the other.

often, the call takers will pass along volume of calls and which way they are leaning.

I've noticed when the call volume really picks up the staffers often don't bother to ask my address. When it gets frenetic like that the representatives have no idea if the calls are in district or out.

The call takers are just passing along a tally like bud said.

Emailed my rep. I emailed my state senator for good measure, reminding him of another gun rights supporter in his district.

Also created witness slips for the 2/27 hearing.

Thanks for the update Todd. I have informed all my family members, coworkers, friends and neighbors about contacting our Reps and Senators plus filling out witness slips. Everyone is all fired up to help us in our final push to our long awaited legislative victory. As I have said before I am 100% we will all be celebrating big time this summer.
