Most of what I have now are pieces of kits from years past that are worn, and many have disappeared over time.time to upgrade.anybody recommend a universal cleaning kit.I would like to spend $50 or less.a opinion on bore snakes also welcome, never used them.

Never found a kit I liked, and I generally make up my own. Bore snakes are good for quick cleanings, or to loosen up fouling before a conventional barrel cleaning. I use them quite a bit, but not as a primary means of keeping bore/barrel clean. Some people are fine with running one through a time or two and pronouncing it "clean." It's a matter of preference and anal retentiveness.

Dewey rods, jags, and brushes.

I've been using a kit I got at a gunshow years ago. It's very similar to this

Gunmaster 35 Piece Universal Gun Cleaning Kit Wood Case on Amazon https://www.amazon.com/Gunmaster-Piece-Universal-Cleaning-Wood/dp/B000BU54JG/ref=sr_1_129?dchild=1&qid=1596283276&s=sports-and-fitness&sr=1-129

Has everything I need, comes with a nice wooden case and is reasonably priced. Downside is the plastic jags are delicate and tend to break. I've tried the Otis cleaning system (brush on a snake) for pistols and hated it.

Years ago , I bought a universal cleaning kit at Walmart and it has served me well through the years. I've had to buy a few extra brushes for different caliber handguns and that's it.
