WASHINGTON/BRUSSELS, Feb 3 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump has paused new tariffs on Mexico for one month after Mexico agreed to reinforce its northern border with 10,000 National Guard members to stem the flow of illegal drugs, particularly fentanyl, he said on Monday.

 

The agreement also includes a U.S. commitment to act to prevent trafficking of high-powered weapons to Mexico, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said on X. The two leaders spoke by phone on Monday, just hours before U.S. tariffs on Mexico, China and Canada were set to take effect.

 

[OK, how?  maybe by disbanding the ATF.  and building a wall.  I'm fairly certain there is no trade agreement between USA and the drug cartels.]

Sheinbaum first disclosed the pause in a post on the X social media site.

 

“We had a good conversation with President Trump with great respect for our relationship and sovereignty; we reached a series of agreements,” Sheinbaum wrote in the tweet, according to a translation from Spanish.

 

She also wrote, “The United States is committed to working to prevent the trafficking of high-powered weapons to Mexico.”

 

Trump had not mentioned a commitment to stem the flow of weapons in his Truth Social post about his conversation with Sheinbaum.

It might not be a good look for Trump if he did. I believe the current pause is so they can work out a deal. 
 

Would it be bad if he included that in an agreement?

It's possible that any firearm crossing into Mexico from the US is high powered.

I suspect High Powered is added for emphasis and they really mean guns of any kind.

And I don't have a problem with "high powered weapons" going south - as long as Americans are operating (and in control of)  them.

How about some RPGs or mortars?  Jeep/truck mounted .30 cal MGs?
