Ideas for packs for "container carry" ?

I wanted to get people's ideas on holster "fanny" pack type setups.

I've looked at a few things like Uncle Mike's Fanny Pack holster, 5.11 Select Carry, Maxpidition Octa and a few others but I wanted to get input.

Also for me - I have a very small carry gun - the Rohrbaugh R9 - only 5.2" OAL and 4" high, I am not looking for some pack that carries everything under the sun - keys, flashlight, tactical flashlight, tactical knife, Leatherman multi tool - blah blah blah all that stuff...

Really looking for something as small as possible, mainly just for transporting my R9 through places I can't carry it, the number 1 priority is being able to transport unloaded but still have access to the firearm and the magazine, number 2 priority would be having it as small as possible.

The thing I don't like about fanny packs is that they scream "GUN!" NO ONE wears one unless they have a gun in it. And usually a giant ISRA hat with oak leaves on it.

That said, there isn't really anything small that is still discrete, and I didn't want to go to a man-purse or messenger bag size, so I went with a 5.11 PushPack, which I'm sure you know is a ripoff of the Maxpedition Versipack. I liked the 5.11 because it is cheaper and looks a little less "tactical". I've seen photographers carrying bags that look similar. It screams more "SOMETHING SMALL & EXPENSIVE!", but I think that is better than "GUN". I really wanted an actual camera bag or something, but couldn't find one reasonably priced that had easy access to a gun-sized compartment.

Both my wife and i wear fanny packs - have for over 20 years. Not once has anyone, "Screamed GUN!" We have never had a gun in them and probably never will. But we do carry many other usefull supplies in them in case of emergencies. We have also seen other people with them that we're pretty sure are not carrying a gun. You can't really generalize like that. Seems to me the other packs you mention would be more of a "GUN!" looking thing than a regular fanny pack.

Check out a DeSantis Easy Rider or Easy Rider II. I believe the II is the smaller one. A zippered case with a paddle so you can take it off and back on quickly. I use mine for fanny pack carry now. I carry a Smith & Wesson Shield in the larger one and the BodyGuard 380 in the small one.

Allow me to rephrase, then. I have never personally seen anyone carrying a fanny pack in the last 15 years that I wasn't 99% sure had a gun in it based on the fact that every one of these people had some other gun related hat, shirt, etc. on.

If you go ask on TFL, THR, ARFCOM, I bet you'd hear a similar response regarding fanny packs. Actually any small pack carried by a male, for that matter.

Well, I guess I could be wrong. I don't leave the farm much....

ETA: Taking a note from Vezpa in the transport vs. carry thread, I'm going to have "NOT A GUN" embroidered on mine. That'll work.

I've used a small fanny pack for my glasses case and other items for years and no one has ever said one word about it.

The nicer thing about having something a little bigger, is you can load it in the bag with out having to take it out, if necessary.

I don't have a lot of experience with smaller bags, but Dakine may have something pretty small, I have a few for riding that I like a lot. Quality wise, I love my 5.11 messenger bag. Very well made.

I think I will start a line of fanny packs with the crossed out pistol on it and the word “gun free zone” embroidered on them. It’s for the “safety of the children” don’t you know….

My brother, the SWAT officer, doesn't realize what is in mine. And believe me, he'd be on my case warning me not to container transport if he knew.

Cops I know here have been trained to watch for fanny packs.

If they see one they assume it has a gun in it.

They don't go harassing people or stopping them for it though.

Hence why I use something designed for firearms that looks like a smart phone holder. Mwahahaha!

I'd recommend a small or medium size timbuck2 classic messenger bag with a pocket holster. Downtown this is a pretty common item so it won't draw attention, but at the same time it has a convienent 'Napoleon' pocket that provides quick access. Some sewn in hook and loop tape should keep the pocket holster firmly inside of the bag.

you might want to consider a zipper for the pocket in order to meet the strict definition of a case.

Coronado leather also makes some nice items.

You could check out a sneaky pete

I have one of those for my LC9. It's a little large for people to think its a cell phone case - and not a size that people automatically think of anything else. It generally prompts a question - "what's in that stupid large thing on your belt?"

Also, I don't think there is any trial history to qualify if its a "case" or a "holster". They sell it as the latter. It would probably qualify as "concealed" for carry - but probably not as a "case" for transport.

Nice idea - just too big to be subtle IMO, and too much risk on the case/holster distinction. I'd prefer something that actually qualifies as a 'case' that can be placed into a pocket (obviously completely enclosing he firearm, unlike pocket holsters....). Does such a thing exist?

Like many have suggested, you will probably have to go looking for something that was actually manufactured to hold something else but that will work. I have used a soft sided camera case and it works fairly well, but I would like to find something that is more like the old fashioned cigar cases that would hold four or five cigars in your inside coat pocket. Most of them were made of molded leather I think. I have gone to cigar stores but so far nothing.

I don't know about that, the first thing most people think when they see one is "fanny pack? Is this guy stuck in the 80's?" :P

Otherwise blackhawk is the only one I'm aware of that makes one specifically for carry. http://www.blackhawk...Pack,879,88.htm

I've got an Uncle Mikes Sidekick fanny pack, it's the larger federal size that they don't make anymore. I've used it to "container transport" for over 8 years. It is black so I guess that it should scream gun. I've never been stopped by a LEO asking "what's in the fanny pack?" I even chatted with a police officer at the Murphysboro Apple Festival a few years ago while wearing it. That said I don't wear it and an NRA hat or shirt or Illinoiscarry hat or shirt or something that indicates I'm a gun owner. I'm 64 so I suppose when people see the fanny pack they just figure "That guy is stuck in the 80's.
