House votes 224-204 for red flag law to keep guns out of the hands of mentally ill and criminals

The House of Representatives voted 224-204 along mostly party lines to pass a so-called red flag law that empowers law enforcement to seize guns from the mentally ill and criminals.

... Rep. Mike Johnson (R-La.) called the measure an unacceptable infringement on people’s right to carry guns, no matter what their mental state or criminal history is.

“It would allow the courts to take guns away from people without notice and without even the right to appear in the hearing to defend themselves in court,” said Johnson, R-La.

The law is one of a package of Democratic measures that the House has passed to crack down on guns

...

But the bills are doomed to failure in the Senate, where Republicans hold effective veto power.

...

The "red flag" crap scares me more than anything they are trying. It is ripe for fraud and abuse! Just think of the protective orders on steroids

I agree. If there were portions that protected against misuse like "Anyone who uses a red flag claim maliciously or fraudulently shall be subject to x dollars and x days jail" and "Those who have had their rights fraudulently removed shall be immediately restored their rights as well as X dollars to be paid from the accusatory party", then I probably wouldn't be too against it. That and make the appeal process extremely easy.

But they can't even resolve parking tickets in a few weeks, I can't imagine how long they would drag out an appeal process if falsely red flagged.

We in Illinois have been dealing with most of this for years. The rest of the country is fighting hard to prevent in from coming to a town near them.

None of this keeps me up at night, except for the thought of “ turn them in”. The second amendment, the courts and the fact that it’s believed that millions will say try to take them prevents that line from being crossed.

A very dear family member who retired from law enforcement several years ago told me once. America made the political decision along time ago that the general populous has the right to be armed to the teeth without the need to understand anything about what that responsibility entails.

He then said he hoped he was long retired when some fool politicians order him to send his men and women

officers to round them up.

Im old, been up to my eyes in the firearms fraternity for 50 years, Ive never seen so much political hostility about everything especially gun. Can’t imagine the mind set of acconfused and angry teenager shooting little kids as the run around screaming in a school room. This will bring an end to the free wheeling gun culture for sure. When millions of mothers fear their children are not safe at school, we will at least be dealing Illinois regulation on a national basis.

The message should be that many good guys ARE available to protect these children at school, BUT manic unstable Democrats demand that children not be exposed to police or armed security "because traumatized".  Expose their agenda to have kids and moms fear the police, preventing kids from feeling safe and protected by friendly police. The left's message and agenda are allowed to fester without challenge and schools remain vulnerable because of those policies.

My sister is a school nurse in Dupage county. She called me some years back when her school was first posted a no gun zone. I told her that it prevents me from entering armed but also, first and for most, it announces that a nut with an AR and a beef will meet no resistance when he enters and lights the place up.

I have to go through a metal detector when I pay my property taxes, but schools, our babies, are defenseless. WTH is wrong with this picture.

its always the same issue

Govt: "we need more funding"

Peasants: "ok how much do you need and we will see if we can make this happen"

Govt: "MOAR!"
