Updates On Attempts to Ban Semi-Auto Firearms

Has anyone heard what the NRA and/or the other pro 2nd amendment response is going to be to these AWB bans?

It appears right now the NRA and ISRA are mostly licking their wounds from the beating Madigan gave them.

In any case, it is not like they can snap their fingers and make AWB go away. They are making gun owners aware of the problem and encouraging citizens to go to the meetings of the local governing bodies and make it clear such things are unwelcome. it most cases, this seems to be working.

for the places it is not working, the courts are the only recourse, and that is a very slow process.

you win some, you lose some, sometimes it is not real obvious whether you have won or lost. but you keep trying.

there's already a court challenge against the Cook Co. ban. depositions are being taken and trial expected later this year or early next year. if the court rules against that ban, any copied from it, I would think, would fall also.

and im just gonna leave it at that.. since theres more going on then you seem to know about....

that is what is going on right now. you may see their near complete silence about the bill as something else. reality is they got clocked, and it will take some time to regroup.

it is not the first time they got whacked, and likely not the last. pretending otherwise does not change that any.

moving forward requires some thinking about what went wrong in an attempt to learn from it rather than trying to fool people into believing it was some great victory.

So far this local AWB thing hasn't been as bad as it could have been. What do we have so far, three bans? All three in towns easy to avoid, and all three likely to be challenged. Gotta keep on top of these.

The Barrington Area:

Barrington - Not Home Rule

North Barrington - Not Home Rule

South Barrington - Home Rule Community - next board meeting July 11th no agenda posted yet.

Barington Hills - Home Rule Community - next board meeting July 22nd. no agenda posted yet.

Lake Barrington - Home Rule Community - next board meeting tomorrow July 2nd. I have been in touch with the village staff several times over the last weeks and they indicated that they had received Sheila Simon's communication. Reviewed it and have no desire to put it on the agenda. Very pleasent and helpful people to talk to.

I will continue to keep an eye on South Barrington and Barrington Hills. I particularly doubt Barrington Hills would do anything.

South Barrington Agenda posted. No AWB mentioned.

(Molly, I just PM'ed you, but then I found the thread)

VILLAGE OF LAKE ZURICH

Board of Trustees

*Police Department*

*200 Mohawk Trail Community Room*

Monday, July 15, 2013, 7:00 p.m

An Ordinance Amending Chapter 3 of Title 5 of the Village Code Regarding

The Regulation of Assault Weapons (Assign ORD. # 2013-07-892)

(Trustee Beaudoin)

Summary: In order to preserve the Village’s ability to address future regulation of

assault weapons, Illinois House Bill 183 requires municipalities to enact such

regulations within 10 days of the passage of this State legislation. It is believed

that by enacting an ordinance addressing storage of these weapons, the ordinance

can be amended in the future to further regulate these weapons if it is felt to be

necessary and in the interest of public safety. The proposed ordinance regulates the

safe storage of assault weapons within the Village.

Recommended Action: Approve proposed ordinance regulating the safe storage of

assault weapons.

Quotes from the Heller opinion:

"He filed this suit seeking, on Second Amendment grounds, to enjoin the city from enforcing ..... the trigger-lock requirement insofar as it prohibits the use of functional firearms in the home. "

Held: "the trigger-lock requirement (as applied to self-defense) violate the Second Amendment."

Held: "the requirement that any lawful firearm in the home be disassembled or bound by a trigger lock makes it impossible for citizens to use arms for the core lawful purpose of self-defense and is hence unconstitutional."

UNIVERSITY PARK

THERE IS NO AGENDA ON THE VILLAGE WEBSITE YET (which appears to be a violation of the IL OMA)

However, I found this blowing down the street on the wind:

MONDAY, JULY 15th at 6:00 pm

90 Town Center, University Park, IL

D: Special committee meeting agenda

(3) A discussion and recommendation regarding an ordinance relating to the regulation of Assault Weapons.

Unfortunately, public comments are after the discussion.
