C0untZer0 Posted November 11, 2017 at 04:17 AM Share Posted November 11, 2017 at 04:17 AM I'm not painting a gun. I purchased a Terävä Jääkäripuukko knife and I want to paint the blade (except for the edge). The black that is on the blade is not rust resistant, its just left over from the forging process. So I'd like to put a coat of rust-resistant paint on it, but I don't really know what paint is the best at preventing rust. Rustoleum obviously advertises itself as a rust-resistant paint but when I Google rust resistant paint it only gets so-so ratings. https://www.varusteleka.com/en/product/terava-jaakaripuukko-carbon-steel/56524 https://youtu.be/btQxnxvfNlk
Windermere Posted November 11, 2017 at 05:44 AM Share Posted November 11, 2017 at 05:44 AM It's hard to keep bare metal from rust and corrosion. Used to work at a truck shop and we would use rustoleum on the frames and lift gates to no avail. Only thing that would stop rust was to hit it with a bed liner type material. Having said that, I don't think you want to spray it with bed liner. I use a product called Boshield T-9. It's made by Boeing. Good stuff. First time I used it was on a roll cage I was putting together to keep the condensation from using my heater in a cold garage leaving surface rust on the cage. It's not a paint, rather a coating. Don't know if that works for you but first thing I thought of. https://boeshield.com/
Trevis Posted November 11, 2017 at 05:47 AM Share Posted November 11, 2017 at 05:47 AM Another super strong stuff that I know of is called POR-15. It's brush on, but can be sprayed. It's pretty tough.
Yeti Posted November 11, 2017 at 12:28 PM Share Posted November 11, 2017 at 12:28 PM What about DuraCoat or similar products sold by Midway/Brownells? Haven’t used that yet but the reviews are good.

mauserme Posted November 11, 2017 at 02:23 PM Share Posted November 11, 2017 at 02:23 PM Have you thought about forcing a patina? It's protective and can be very attractive. And , if you do that and don't like the results, you can still paint over it.
Mr. Fife Posted November 11, 2017 at 03:32 PM Share Posted November 11, 2017 at 03:32 PM I would just keep it oiled or rub some Froglube into the blade
DD123 Posted November 11, 2017 at 04:02 PM Share Posted November 11, 2017 at 04:02 PM There is a protective wax that museums use to prevent rust on metallic artifacts. I was given a heads up on it by my uncle to put on some blued guns that I own to prevent rusting. It's called Renaissance Micro-Crystalline Wax Polish. If you want to go the painting route, then I'm not sure what would be best, but that wax does work extremely well.
carry Posted November 12, 2017 at 02:02 AM Share Posted November 12, 2017 at 02:02 AM All the above tips got me googling, didn't find paint, or patina, but found the BoeShield T-9 and Renaissance at : https://www.theruststore.com Also looked up the MSDS (Material Data Safety Sheets) to see what's in the stuff (https://www.theruststore.com/The-Rust-Store-MSDS-Sheets-W16.aspx): Looks like T-9 is Mineral OilRustFree is Phosphoric Acid (think Pepsi) Not protective, but maybe try Aluminum Black, or some blueing or browning solution (used this on a percussion cap pistol kit to brown the barrel). tkroenlein Posted November 12, 2017 at 05:45 AM Share Posted November 12, 2017 at 05:45 AM I have a vinegar patina'd 80crv2 Lauri bladed puukko that is pretty darned hard to rust. In fact, it never has. It came with the forge scale just like your Jaakaripuukko. I buffed it off with a dremel and dunked in white vinegar for 8 hours. Neutralize and oil. Much tougher than paint. The 80crv2 is pretty easy to care for anyway with the added chromium. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
