InterestedBystander Posted January 24, 2020 at 03:18 AM Share Posted January 24, 2020 at 03:18 AM https://ispfsb.com/Public/FAQ.aspxWas I not paying attention and missed this? Was it not just 4 before with ID and NV new? How are we supposed to be kept informed other than checking FAQs? Q: How can I find out if my state's laws are considered "substantially similar?" A: The Illinois State Police sent a survey to each state to determine which states have laws that are substantially similar. Currently, the only states considered to be substantially similar are Arkansas, Idaho, Mississippi, Nevada, Texas and Virginia. THE KING Posted January 24, 2020 at 03:24 AM Share Posted January 24, 2020 at 03:24 AM Well it would be nice if they let us instructors know when they make these changes. Does anyone know when Idaho and Nevada were added. SMH
InterestedBystander Posted January 24, 2020 at 03:33 AM Author Share Posted January 24, 2020 at 03:33 AM PDF says it is a 2018 survey with a stamped date 1/9/2020. https://ispfsb.com/Public/SubstantiallySimilarSurvey.pdf I happened to be verifying a question from elsewhere and the survey was there but no states listed anymore. Checked a couple of hours later and the states had also been added. Its kind of funny that it almost looks like CA should also be approved. THE KING Posted January 24, 2020 at 03:40 AM Share Posted January 24, 2020 at 03:40 AM Thanks for finding this and posting it. It still amazes me that we weren't notified of the change.

It still amazes me that we weren't notified of the change.Agreed it seems instructors should at least be notified. I don't see how a FAQ can be considered an official update. At minimum something published in JCAR minutes or rules website.
Molly B. Posted January 24, 2020 at 03:48 AM Share Posted January 24, 2020 at 03:48 AM It must have been a very recent update on the website because I checked it very recently and it was unchanged. The ISP has posted somewhere that it's up to the instructors to stay updated on changes and to check the website often.

Yet the web site still shows a 24 hr wait for long guns in one of the FAQs. So much for confidence in what you read there...
45b Posted July 1, 2020 at 01:37 AM Share Posted July 1, 2020 at 01:37 AM I have told possible students not to apply for Illinois out-of-state licenses. I had a student take the course, apply for license with $300 fee, receive license 120 days later, and thenget a notice from ISP 30 days later. Your state is no longer one of the accepted similar training and your license is no longer valid. No refund or even a "Sorry, but kiss my *ss". I do not condone ripping off citizens and will not participate in scams. That was wrong and they should have returned the honest citizens money. Texas-Mark Posted November 12, 2020 at 04:09 PM Share Posted November 12, 2020 at 04:09 PM These states have been in effect for a while. I got my IL non-resident licence back in Aug 2018. A friend of mine in Chicago just did her class and they were still using the old list. I had to send her a picture of my licence to prove it to the instructor. It was other states added and dropped. This post made me go back and check for changes...still the same list as in the OP from Jan.

Quiet Observer Posted April 10, 2021 at 02:54 PM Share Posted April 10, 2021 at 02:54 PM I do not know understand someone would spend the time and money before verifying that they were eligible for a state's permit. Information can be found on various websites, e.g. Handgunlaw.us, USACarry, as well as the respective state websites. A friend or relative is not a definitive source.I do not remember if I had to give my address before signing up for my class, but an instructor who knowingly takes money from someone who lives in a state not accepted by the ISP is unethical, if not worse.
