gmk Posted February 26, 2017 at 06:47 PM Posted February 26, 2017 at 06:47 PM What do you have to do when traveling by train with firearms? Is it the same as air travel? Going from Illinois to Texas.
InterestedBystander Posted February 26, 2017 at 08:18 PM Posted February 26, 2017 at 08:18 PM I've never done it. But, we've had a couple of Amtrak threads, and this was the first out of search. Something to review until others respond http://illinoiscarry.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=62414
Quiet Observer Posted February 26, 2017 at 08:18 PM Posted February 26, 2017 at 08:18 PM They must be unloaded and stored in locked container in checked baggage.https://www.amtrak.com/firearms-in-checked-baggage
RacerDave6 Posted February 26, 2017 at 08:19 PM Posted February 26, 2017 at 08:19 PM Basically yes. Has to go in checked baggage. Note that not all stations accept checked baggage. Rules are on the Amtrak site. It's cheaper and faster to fly.
MrTriple Posted February 26, 2017 at 09:50 PM Posted February 26, 2017 at 09:50 PM I did this one myself, but from a strongly pro-gun area to anti-gun area (Chicago). Amtrak requires that the firearm be unloaded in a hard case, locked, and you must notify them 24 hours in advance about the fact that you're transporting a firearm. I did this in person, as it was easier than dealing with their hotline. But I haven't tried yet from Chicago Union Station. If you wanna be safe, maybe go there in person to ask the personnel at the ticket and baggage counter.
DoYouFeelLucky Posted February 26, 2017 at 11:13 PM Posted February 26, 2017 at 11:13 PM I love travelling by train, however the above comment is correct, it is usually cheaper to fly. A nice seat in the dome car with cold beers appearing on a regular basis does somewhat compensate for that!
