With the start of the 98th General Assembly tomorrow, we once again need volunteers to help watch for new firearm related bills. While not a difficult task, monitoring these bills is crucial to our continued defense of the Second Amendment.

Each volunteer will be assigned a group of 200 bills. Simply visit the Bills and Resolutions page periodically, click on the number group(s) assigned to you, and check any that appear to effect us (this is often easier by right clicking the bill, then clicking "open in a new tab" so you don't lose your place in the list). Any bills that seem relevant should be posted in this thread.

Pay particular attention to bills that effect the following codes, including "shell bills" that change a single word but can be used for other purposes later. Appropriations bills can be ignored:

430 - Public Safety Code

520 - Wildlife Code

525 - Conservation Code

720 - Criminal Code

Mauserme, I've been monitoring bills in the past but It'll be rough for the next three weeks.

If we still need eyes starting 1 Feb I'll have more time.

Posted

I'll be watching, but will be very busy the next few weeks.

Can I put you down for a group of "middle of the list" House and Senate bills?

I've never monitored bills before but I tend to have at least an hour or so a day that I could devote to this. If that would be enough, I'd love to volunteer.

I'll start you out easy with SB0201 - SB0400. Give it a run and let me know when you're ready for more

Sign me up for a group in Senate and a group in House.

Thanks!

HB0401-HB0600 and SB0401-SB0600 are all yours.

Thanks,

Will do. I should have some open time here at work after lunch when I can start. Is it ok if I PM you if I have a question?

Of course it is. PM me anytime.

And remember, they won't start filing the new bill until later today at the earliest. The bills that are there right now are still for the 97th General Assembly. Make sure the page says 98th General Assembly at the top before putting any effort into this.

Count me in mause

I assumed you meant a group of each so HB0601-HB0800 and SB0601-SB0800.

Sure thing.

Thanks, I gave you HB2001-HB2200 and SB2001-SB2200.

Let me know if those come up too soon and I'll rearrange things.

I would be more than willing to help, Please add me on an open HB and SB group. Thanks

Didn't the legislature just try to ban you, CM_50BMG? Glad to see you survived the ordeal.

HB1001-HB1200 and SB1001-SB1200 are all yours.

I have you down for HB1201-HB1400 and SB1201-SB1400.

Just check a couple times a day until you see them start to be filed in your blocks, or getting close to your blocks. The lower numbers usually fill in pretty quickly so once your blocks start they'll probably fill up in less than a day.

Keep in mind that the House and Senate work on different schedules. Don't be surprised if Senate bills lag behind the house.

I'm trying to get my head wrapped around this. Looking at your example of HB0051 they changed the word "the" to the word "the" and that is the only change in the bill? WHY?????.

Is the only way to check the bills by reading thru each one in your block? How often do they need to be checked?

Maybe I'm making this harder then what it really is but before I sign on I want to be sure I know what I'm doing is right.

you CAN teach an old dog new tricks, but will he remember them is the question

I'll take 1401-1600 in both houses.

Got it. Thanks.

Remember the way they amended bills last week?

Sometimes they use these shell bills as a sort of place keeper - a place to fill in substansive wording down the road. That doesn't mean they're necessarily trying to hide anything. The sponsor of the 2 I posted above is someone we can trust. It could be a change he wants to make but hasn't written the bill yet. It could be they will end up completely unrelated to us in the long run. But since they speak to the FOID Act right now I will keep an eye on them,

When I check bills I usually look at the title first. Some of them, like appropriations, can be skipped. If the title is nondescript, like "An act Concening Safety", go a little deeper - read the synopsis, read the text if you need to. If the title is "An Act to Disarm the General Populace" just post it here immediately.

And don't worry that this whole thing is entirely on your shoulders. I usually check around behind the scenes and will probably see everything you do a second time. And Todd develops his own lists. Just want to set your mind at ease that nobody will come back later and and accuse you of missing something.

As far as how often to check, once you've checked the bills assigned to you, you're pretty much done. Once filed, a bill would have to be amended through processes you've already seen if its going to be changed. We generally don't expect volunteers to try to keep track of that in the long run. This thread in only about identifying bills we should watch as they are filed.
