azone5 Posted May 24, 2013 at 08:23 PM Posted May 24, 2013 at 08:23 PM You have defeated one of the most powerful men in the history of American politics! My hat is off to you. Mickey

You're really out to make friends around here, aren't you...? Todd, thanks for everything you've done for us, and all you are doing going forward! Let me know the next time you are in the vicinity of the NW suburbs of Chicago. I have a case or two of Heinies with your name on them.
Plinkermostly Posted May 24, 2013 at 08:26 PM Posted May 24, 2013 at 08:26 PM Preemption and shall . . . the rest we can work on. Against Madigan, you done good Bro.! Thank you.

Hoffsoft Posted May 24, 2013 at 08:28 PM Posted May 24, 2013 at 08:28 PM Todd, you did the impossible. My deepest gratitude and admiration. I have no idea how you put up with fools that know nothing of the system, or worse, know it too well. Have a beer and celebrate this one. You earned it, and we all owe you a great debt.

entropy Posted May 24, 2013 at 08:29 PM Posted May 24, 2013 at 08:29 PM I cannot recall if I have ever posted here since I registered. I do however, visit here often to keep up to speed on this State. I would like to say the following: Thank you Todd, and all that have worked with you, for your tireless and selfless dedication to our Freedoms. This Bill is not perfect, but considering what we all battle every damn day in this State, it is nothing short of remarkable. Regardless of where the final Bill emerged, without Todd's work, we'd have nothing. I'm not talking about the last several months either. I'm talking the years he's battled these people. No reason to think defeat. No reason to hang your head. Quite the opposite. If I ever have the pleasure to meet you, you can bet the beer will be on me. I hope to see your permit come back with #00000000000-1 on it. You deserve it my friend. Best. Jim

drewtam Posted May 24, 2013 at 08:32 PM Posted May 24, 2013 at 08:32 PM Thanks to all those who helped make this happen, Todd, Molly, Moore, Sheperd, McDonald, etc. Its not over yet. We still got to win super majority in the Senate, then override the Gov's veto; or possibly amendment veto, or Senate amendments. So I suspect that the leadership team is still hard at work until its truly passed the finish line. Worst mistake is to let up before the finish line is officially crossed. When it becomes official is the time to party. But today is a good day, and I am grateful.
StreuB1 Posted May 24, 2013 at 08:32 PM Posted May 24, 2013 at 08:32 PM My thanks are always and have always been there. Look forward to shaking your hand at the club next time you're out. Just remember guys, we aren't done and neither is he. Like Bud said, things went really awry and Todd is laying low for a bit till this is all over. I am sure this is more of a kick in the pants to the people on the front lines than us. In their eyes, we are all trusting in them an that is a MASSIVE amount of responsibility to drag around with you. People here at times forget that. I am sure Todd and some others stared at the other end of a few bottles over this and did some hard soul searching. It is terribly important for them to know, we thank them and that you did not let us down!!!

I can understand his grief at all of this. Never will I blame Todd, Madigan is clearly the puppet master of the house. I just though my representative was more than a mindless marionette.
Phatty Posted May 24, 2013 at 08:36 PM Posted May 24, 2013 at 08:36 PM Without a doubt, if it wasn't for the long fight and hard work put in by Todd, Madigan would never have been put in a position where he felt he needed to compromise.

richp Posted May 24, 2013 at 08:50 PM Posted May 24, 2013 at 08:50 PM Hi BackForward, Let's put this in perspective -- legislators are under no obligation to let anyone at all help them draft bills. So saying that about Todd was pretty shabby. The reason Todd has been so central to the process up until now has been the respect he has built up in the legislature. But none of those folks have to give him the time of day outside the formal structure. And Madigan does have every bit of the political power we attribute to him -- including the power to do things unilaterally. The indisputable fact is that Todd, Molly, and others did an immense amount of background work in setting the context for the current situation. They've been informing key people, outlining potential issues and strategies, and otherwise preparing for a necessary vote. We'll never know how much impact their work had, but it surely was substantial. I'm personally 100% certain Todd is taking a seat in the back row now because anything he said could be used against us. Some of these Senators now have to make a real hard choice about who to line up with. Even the slightest intimation that this was "an NRA bill" would work against passage. Now if you don't want this bill to pass, I get it that. But to put Todd down that way is fundamentally unfair and not one bit useful going forward. FWIW. Rich Phillips
blazzinbird Posted May 24, 2013 at 08:52 PM Posted May 24, 2013 at 08:52 PM I still think Todd knows some stuff he can't tell us. Well until all of this is over.

You don't much understand all of this, do you..... Being involved behind the scenes but outside of the room is not "shut out of the negotiations"... Being outside the room but behind the scenes gives everyone the plausible deniability they needed. If you do not think that this bill has the fingerprints of the NRA, ISRA, Illinois Carry and some other folks, well, then you need to think through it some more. A lot of folks around here know exactly where a lot of the good language in this bill came from. Thanks, Todd. Nice work....
Phatty Posted May 24, 2013 at 09:02 PM Posted May 24, 2013 at 09:02 PM He's been strategically quiet this week. We still live in a deep blue nanny state. And keep in mind that unlike every other deep blue state, Illinois has not had any pro-gun control bills pass this year. It seems like in the past 6 months, all the other blue states have been greatly restricting gun rights. We successfully beat back the post-Sandy Hook tidal wave of gun control, and now look to actually have more gun rights in the near future than less rights. When you think about the current political make up of the State of Illinois (all three branches dominated by Democrats and government controlled by Chicago machine), it really is an impressive accomplishment.
