Update 5/21

Going into yesterday's hearingwe knew we would lose as it is the Exec committee. And we knew the Sandy Hook parents would add an emotional element to it.

What we didn't know was that some republicans were looking to throw us under the bus. We have heard from some that the party needs to moderate in order to be competitive in Illinois. That to some, means going weak on the second amendment issue.

We are not sure what they are thinking, as the House has taken somewhere on the order of 30 votes on guns and the senate nary a one this session, but for some reason a couple of senators think they need to vote for a magazine ban to soften their vote for a carry bill. I can't explain it.

At this point, if you heard the committee testimony, you know the "we got to do something" mentality even if it won't accomplish anything except make it harder on gun owners.

Some have complained on the board here about downstate dems and their capitulation on carry issues, well now you can see that it isn't limited to the democrats.

Do not take anyone or anything for granted. We need to contact ALL the senators and reps and beat down this magazine ban.

Outside of the position papers put out yesterday, we should also highlight that in two parts of the bill it makes it illegal to transport a magazine unless it is unloaded and enclosed in a case. So the question is how does one carry a handgun that has a 15 round magazine?

How do you carry any spare mags?

So this looks to be another limitation on trying to put down a carry law that no one can comply with.

Light 'em up boys we got 10 days to go.

It seems lots of folks on here were worried about the downstate dem's turning on us and it is now the upstate republican's. personally I don't trust either party as a whole.

Once again we appreciate your service and the heads up. We'll keep after 'em.

So they decide that they want to begin to moderate at the eleventh hour with only a few days left in the session and with the most important Bill coming before them and their careers as Politicians? What will they receive in return for casting a no vote is the question that needs to be answered! We have them by the u-no-whats and now their knees are getting weak?

Time to mark this down and bring it out come election time...

I live in Sen Radogno's district and she told me right to my face that she is with us all the way. She turns around and votes for the mag ban. There is no polite way to say this but she is a bold face liar that can't ever be trusted again. I along with numerous friends and family members who all live in her district will continue to contact her about voting for a 997 like bill but at this point I don't know what to expect from her. We all have long memories and will not forget about what she did and what she will be doing in the next few weeks on her next election day.

Thanks for the insight and the update Todd........looks like we have some legislators who are screaming that they would like to come back to the civilian populace!!!! Let's make it happen for them in the next election!!!

My Senator is Karen McConnaughay. I've contacted her many times throughout this process but have never heard back regarding her stance on the 2nd. Does anyone know where she stands on these issues?

Being moderate is like being bi-partisan. All you have to do is act like a Democrat. If we can only elect moderates then stay home. Look at the moderate George Ryan we elected. Wasn't that useful for us?

92% nra rating but as we learned from Murphy and Radongo that number means nothing to them anymore.

All ready done. Her aide said the Senator will be giving me a call soon to explain her vote. I am anxious to here what possible reason she will give me for stabbing us in the back.

Todd,

Since Senator Althoff referred to "NRA Representatives" being in negotions (see my email exchange with her below), I would ask is this true? Senator Althoff voted for a Magazine restriction to 10 rounds with SB 1007 in May 2007. I emailed and asked her postition, but she has not responded again. Do you know where she stands?

======================================================================================================

Sorry for the delay Greg…we are a little busy..but that is no excuse. Several bills regarding conceal and carry have been introduced but none meet all the criterias our constituency deserves…my understanding is that Speaker Madigan and the NRA representatives in Springfield are in the midst of negotiations…obviously Senator Raoul’s bill was unacceptable and no vote in the Senate was forthcoming as not even 30 people would vote for it! Stay tuned

Dear Senator Althoff,

While I didn't hear back from you regarding my email, I am confident that you are listening to your constituents and are simply too busy to reply. I certainly understand there is a lot happening in Springfield right now.

With all of the bills being proposed in the Senate by the Chicago Democrats and Senate Leadership regarding stricter gun laws and bad CCW laws, I would appreciate your efforts and voice to ensure a good carry bill is passed.

I am sure you have all of the data and information available to help those "on the fence" understand not only our right to bear arms as citizens of Illinois, but the benefits of doing so to the general public. However, I thought I'd share this article that outlines the facts, and is a strong case for less restrictive laws, not more restrictive.

http://www.forbes.com/sites/larrybell/2013/05/14/disarming-realities-as-gun-sales-soar-gun-crimes-plummet/

And finally, I found this passage from Thomas Jefferson that clearly articulates the thought process and beliefs of those that created our Constitution and Civil Rights. Again, I'm sure you have read this before, but it is worth repeating:

"Laws that forbid the carrying of arms...disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes. Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed one."

Thank you again, and please do all you can to support our Constitutional Rights!

Best Regards,

She is my Senator. She has co-sponsored a real nice companion bill to 997 in the Senate that never went to a third reading. She replied to me once that she is Pro 2A and so far she has kept to her word.

We need to find out what the Republicans want real bad this session and see if Madigan has made any promises to anyone to change their mind.

I have contacted my extremely pro-2A representative and senator, and I will keep reminding them about my duty as a US citizen of non-compliance to rights infringing bills.

My guess is that what they want real bad is to not have their votes against a mag ban and for a carry bill being used in the same campaign ad as crying parents-turned-shills.

Don't they realize that NOT supporting a good carry bill and turning on us at the last minute is going to be political suicide anyway?

Good morning Senator,

I'd like to ask you to oppose SB1002 which amended would ban many common firearms. While it is called a "High Capacity" magazine ban, there are many many firearms that law abiding citizens use to hunt, and protect their homes with that would outright be banned by this bill.

I also object to the exploitation of Sandy Hook families by Senator Kotowski to forward his anti-gun views while he does nothing to enhance safety at our schools.

If Senator Kotowski and bill co-sponsors claim to be enhancing "safety" why haven't they proposed a bill that calls for an assessment of physical security at Illinois schools?

Why no funds to create better doors and more secure entrances?

Why no funding for increased security cameras?

Why no funding to increase police presence or hire armed security guards?

How would what they are proposing stop a jihadist from repeating a Sandy Hook incident ?

Please oppose SB1002.

Thank you,

Unprincipled republicans, who feel the need to be "moderate" on the issues...? How in the world did that happen?

Who says moderate republicans are even close to competing with IL democrats, anyway? LOL

So I am not sure what the final "opponent / proponent" witness slip count ended up being by the time the committee voted yesterday, but it was extremely weighted towards "opposed". Why then....did it not seem to have any bearing at all on the way that they voted.

Just trying to understand the process...and how effective or ineffective my efforts are.

Thank in advance for any clarity ....

Brigg
