Tvandermyde Posted March 20, 2010 at 04:17 PM Posted March 20, 2010 at 04:17 PM Ok I’m at a point in my life where I can afford most of the guns I want. And I have started on a nice starter collection for my two boys. But I’m running out of space in my safe. Check that, I am out of space. They don’t make gun safes for scoped guns. And most of mine from the 10/22s to my 700 sniper rifles all have some sort of optics on them. And they don’t fit. I was looking at the new Browning safes with there door system, but the it’s not designed for scoped guns either. I I thought I would make my own door rack, but I don’t really gain anything as I can put the same number of guns on the door, but lose 10” inside with the rack when closing the door. I got a piece of steel bent and mounted, and found some holders at the hardware store, but not really sure it’s gonna gain me anything. The safe I bought was about the biggest Liberty at the time standing 72” tall. I’ve had to rip out the majority of the interior just to try to get most of my stuff in there. A bunch of my stuff is at the range in Springfield for when we take legislators shooting. Unless I get a Zanotti takedown safe, I can’t get a bigger one in the house so I don’t know what to do. And giving you guys some of my guns to make room is NOT an answer. Nice thought and try though. I just want to make sure that when I’m out of town or out of the house things are secure and out of sight.

Tvandermyde Posted March 20, 2010 at 04:47 PM Author Posted March 20, 2010 at 04:47 PM I've been thinking about the rifle rods, but I don't know how much I'll really save. I'm gonna order some and see what happens if it's really worth it. It's not an arsenal, its a collection.

Buzzard Posted March 20, 2010 at 04:49 PM Posted March 20, 2010 at 04:49 PM At the moment, I happen to know where you can get an old bank vault door and frame. (If the guy hasn't gotten rid of it yet.) Then just build your own climate controlled, walk-in gun safe. As big as you want and your basement allows.
Johnnybgood Posted March 20, 2010 at 05:10 PM Posted March 20, 2010 at 05:10 PM Just kidding there Todd.

Hey Buzz, do you have any idea the size of the door and frame? I have a cousin (not Drylok, though I'm sure he wishes) that built a new house a couple of years ago with a walk in gun-safe in his basement under his garage. He is currently using a steel fire-proof door but last time I talked to him about it he was still looking for an old vault door for a decent price.
Ol'Coach Posted March 20, 2010 at 05:35 PM Posted March 20, 2010 at 05:35 PM Is the pink rifle for Naomi?
Tvandermyde Posted March 20, 2010 at 05:36 PM Author Posted March 20, 2010 at 05:36 PM What pink stock? there is a purple one you can see the barrel on

No, I don't know the size, but we're talking a full size bank vault from around the thirties. I will ask if it's still for sale.
Tvandermyde Posted March 20, 2010 at 06:14 PM Author Posted March 20, 2010 at 06:14 PM here is what I was trygin to get at, take my shotguns get them on the door, plus have a couple of my tactical guns at the ready as soon as you open the door. But I'm having a hard time making it work. And i'm not licking up that much space.
1957Human Posted March 20, 2010 at 06:20 PM Posted March 20, 2010 at 06:20 PM ... A bunch of my stuff is at the range in Springfield for when we take legislators shooting. Ah... a tax-deductible business expense habit!
Don Gwinn Posted March 20, 2010 at 06:20 PM Posted March 20, 2010 at 06:20 PM There's a company that sells plastic rods with disk-shaped stands on the ends at Springfield gun shows (or did last year, anyway.) The disk-shaped stands have hook velcro on them, and you put a large patch of the fuzzy loop velcro on the ceiling of the safe (usually the bottom of a shelf.) Then you can stick the rod into the muzzle of a long gun, put the gun anywhere in the safe, and pull the rod up and stick it to the velcro. It holds the gun there, upright, not touching any of the walls or racks unless you want it to. I've been thinking about it for my cheap steel stack-on boxes, because I'm having the same problem with the optics not fitting. I figure if I can't find them, I can make the things myself for cheap.
Yas Posted March 20, 2010 at 06:25 PM Posted March 20, 2010 at 06:25 PM Todd are you willing to get some MDF cut it, cover it with fabric and put it in your safe. I took a quick peek at Libertys web site and not sure if you can order something. I'm only familiar with Fort Knox and it's interior is modular having slotted rails built in the interior. Nice if a major interior redesign is desired. This is a 20 + year old FK pamphlet
Tvandermyde Posted March 20, 2010 at 06:40 PM Author Posted March 20, 2010 at 06:40 PM Don -- they are called rifle rods and I am looking at them. I just don't know if it will get me where I need to be. Yas -- I ripped out the interior becuase the "notches" are to close for scoped guns either side to side or front to back. On my tactical scopes the knobs bump each other side to side. Front to rear the scopes plus pistol grips mean I alomst have to skip every other row or alternate every other notch. I've comtemplated getting a piece of steel and nothing it, but I still need 4 plus inches of clearance for the scope from the wall. Ft Knox has this new 61" 84 gun -- yea right only if you have a model 94 collection. http://www.ftknox.com/nav_test/gun-safe-images/7251-gun-safe84.jpgAnd I rip out the interior and start over but with a larger safe
05FLHT Posted March 20, 2010 at 06:55 PM Posted March 20, 2010 at 06:55 PM The only problem with using a vault door on an existing room or closet is that one could always just bypass the door by going through the wall. If your out of room for a new safe and need firm support for a bad back, how about a bed bunker. I have no idea of practical or comfortable it actually is, or but it sure made my wife laugh when I showed her the website. http://www.bedgunsafe.com/
lockman Posted March 20, 2010 at 10:26 PM Posted March 20, 2010 at 10:26 PM Getting the safe in the house is always the hardest part and many times just as expensive as the safe. Walk-in basements do have distinct advantages. I have repaired a few Liberty safes dropped down the stairs by delivery people. I believe in more smaller capacity safes bolted down, than one large one. Todd, after looking into that safe I get the impression that all your eggs are not in that one basket.
Tvandermyde Posted March 20, 2010 at 10:44 PM Author Posted March 20, 2010 at 10:44 PM lockman -- No they don't fit but that new Fort Knox is getting m,y attention as soon as I can get a price. I think I figured out a partial solution today. Not what I want but I'll post pics after I get done in a couple hours
Tvandermyde Posted March 21, 2010 at 02:48 AM Author Posted March 21, 2010 at 02:48 AM After spending another several hours on and off the project today the door is done. I'll order some rifle rods to try and make the inside work, but I have come to the conclusion that I need a bigger safe. And the new Fort Knox 72H x 61w 84 gun (yea right) model look to be it, unless I get a Zanotti and put it i the basement for the guns I don't break out all that often. I still can't get 10 guns in and I still have more out of town. I give up. This was the best I could do to get the most on the door, but I lose over 10" inside. I'm going for a beer.
templar223 Posted March 21, 2010 at 02:54 AM Posted March 21, 2010 at 02:54 AM Showoff... http://pages.ripco.net/~tin-man/smiles/anim_lol.gif 1. Todd, your safe appears terribly disorganized. 2. I'm glad to see those loaded magazines. Those g**damn zombies aren't going to kill themselves. 3. You need a LOT more magazines! 4. Hopefully some of the drawings and links above will help with #1. Lastly, I'll say I've got two full safes and have relegated the overage to key "preposition" rally points. Should the po-po come clean out my home of guns and ammo following a self-defense incident (using a tractor trailer, of course), I have plenty of firepower available to me elsewhere in IL and beyond. You might think of doing the same. No, I'm not offering to store some at my house. Again, my safes are full. John
Tvandermyde Posted March 21, 2010 at 03:07 AM Author Posted March 21, 2010 at 03:07 AM john -- I ripped out the rack trying to get more room. I can only work on it in spare time least you not want me at the capitol. So I try to keep my stuff locked up when gone. goal is to get it all in -- if possible. They don;t make safes for guns with scopes or tactical rifles. When the 1,000 screaming chins come across the border, thats not the time to start to think about loading. those are ONLY the mags IN THE safe. old style army ammo bandelers hold 7 -- 20 rounders nicely. And I have 4 tactical vest 2 -- 223, 1 -- 308 1 9mm smg stacked and packed I've got guns in other parts of the state. but having 4 or 5 sets of gear gets a bit expensive, if you consider 1 good 5.56/223, 1 good bolt gun, 1 .308 semi-auto, 1 -- 1911, 1 -- 9mm, 1 tactical shotgun, 1 .22lr Like I said I think a new fort knox is in the furture
illinisnare Posted March 21, 2010 at 06:58 PM Posted March 21, 2010 at 06:58 PM Todd, Rough problem to have. I'm sure I'll be in the same boat one of these days. Could you or your obviously understanding wife please talk to my wife so I can accelerate the time frame a bit? Thanks. Any way you could rig your own 'rifle rods' with a PVC Pipe contraption?
Tvandermyde Posted March 21, 2010 at 07:42 PM Author Posted March 21, 2010 at 07:42 PM rule number 1 -- leave house with empty gun case. rule number 2 -- return with full case. When asked as I was last night how long I had a certain gun she did not recall seeing before "awhile" was my answer. By lots of raffle tickets for gun raffles and go to DU, NRA or safari club dinners. It just seems to work out that way. i will have to admit that a couple of years ago, I was at a dinner and spent $400 on raffle tickets. I won 6 guns, including 2 AR-15s. The other lucky part for me is I haven't paid retail on a gun in 10 years -- except those which I get through my cabela's club card. I get charged retail, but get them with points. I would offer this. I have a LOT of 10/22s that I have built. I look for used ones for $100 or less. Strip them down then start ordering parts. Stock from hogue $75. Barrel for tacsol $185, scope mount EGW $30. Over time when you find a pile of parts, a couple of beers and a friend and next thing you know you just built 3 rifles. Back to your question, Last night I showed my wife a sig mosquito I had picked up. First auto she can work the slide on. So I''m off toget a light laser combo for the rail for her as a self defense gun when I'm not home and I'll get her a new black one. She found one she likes so it's about me not being home and something that fit her hand. She is going to learn how to run the 9mm AR this summer along with some other stuff.
Lou Posted March 21, 2010 at 10:19 PM Posted March 21, 2010 at 10:19 PM My problem is a little different. The best place tactically for me is in the walk-in closet in my bedroom on the second floor. The SMALLEST safe I can get to hold what I have now is still way too heavy for me to get up the stairs. I tend to favor handguns but I still need a safe big enough to hold a long gun or three. Anyone here have a strong back to lend for 15 minutes or so??????
Tvandermyde Posted March 21, 2010 at 11:05 PM Author Posted March 21, 2010 at 11:05 PM look at Zannotti armor. I would consider them for something like that

GarandFan Posted March 22, 2010 at 03:14 AM Posted March 22, 2010 at 03:14 AM Based on the photo, my advice might be to place some of the long guns muzzle down. Doing so might use up some of that empty space up at the top, giving you room for perhaps a half-dozen more. That's what I do, anyway. And I could still take the dividers out, like you've done, freeing up even more space. You might also consider buying a bunch of gun socks ... with those on my nicest long guns, I don't mind them all resting against one another. But I will have to buy another safe, eventually. It just comes with the territory.
Buzzard Posted March 22, 2010 at 03:41 AM Posted March 22, 2010 at 03:41 AM look at Zannotti armor. I would consider them for something like that I once again, am going to say 'listen to Todd' because I happen to own a Zannotti safe. I'm happy with my choice. For those that want a "Safe room", they will also sell you a door and frame I understand.

Homes/floor joices hold so much weight. You might get some bending in the floors.
