Three for three, HAPPY VALENTINES DAY!!! Congradulations and thanks to all those involved. Way to stay at 'em Tplane sounds like you had a close one. Hey Abolt, since the general concencus is to let Douglas rest for a while I was thinking maybe we could figure out who we might know up there and give them a gentle push to try this from the inside next time. Surely UJ or Scotty knows somebody in Douglas.

Ladies and Gentlemen...Today, was a good day. Rest easy tonight.

Are there any plans for a road trip to McHenry on the 19th to show support? I think this should be left up to whomever is handling things up there.

I am proud to stand among you gentlemen! You have tasted the sweet taste of standing up for what is right, you have gone into battle and come out the victor . . . there is no stopping now - on to the next victory!

A proud and appreciative,

Molly B.

My personal gratitude and commendation to everyone who was involved with this triumvirate of victories today. Getting Peoria to support this cause is a major accomplishment.

Explanation:

Champaign is red because it was once on the agenda, was removed, and I have been told it will not be placed back on the agenda.

Douglas is white because it never was on the agenda

As far as I kow, Rock Island and Stark were never on the agenda. If that is incorrect, and they were there but removed, let me know and I'll red 'em!

Despite reservations, county board OKs resolution in support of Second Amendment

DECATUR - The Macon County Board on Thursday narrowly approved a resolution expressing opposition to unspecified legislation under consideration by the Illinois General Assembly that gun rights advocates argue infringes on the Second Amendment.

The resolution passed in a 10-9 vote after a lengthy debate in which some board members questioned whether the right to bear arms is an issue in which the county should be involved.

Decatur resident Dustin Meier told the board he wanted the county board to approve the resolution because of concerns he and other gun owners have about gun control legislation in Springfield.

Meier told the board similar resolutions had already been passed in 66 other Illinois counties by a group of citizens who post on the Web site, Illinoiscarry.org.

But not all board members considered imperative the passage of the nonbinding resolution stating opposition to "the enactment of any legislation that would infringe upon the right of the people to keep and bear arms."

Board member Bill Oliver, D-Decatur, contended the county board should not get involved in the issue because the county has no authority over gun laws.

"In my eyes, anything that affects the (U.S.) Constitution affects your county board," Meier argued.

Still, some board members were unconvinced.

Board Chairman Bob Sampson, D-Decatur, said he was wary of the precedent set by the county's involvement on the issue as it could pave the way for future board debates on such issues as impeaching President Bush or abortion.

Sampson compared the situation to when the board in 2006 rejected a resolution sought by a board member to make English the official language of Macon County after it was discovered English was already the official language of Illinois.

But Bryan Smith, D-Decatur, whose operations, personnel and legislative committee unanimously supported the resolution, said the board has not always abstained from taking a stand on controversial issues.

He noted a resolution approved by the board in 1993 asked WAND-TV to choose a later time to air the crime drama, "NYPD Blue," which was under protest at the time because of its sexual and violent content.

In other business, the board unanimously approved a resolution supporting a revised path for a high-speed natural gas pipeline that will run through Macon County.

Board members John Snyder, D-Decatur, and Dave Wolfe, D-Oakley, were absent.[

I suspected that would happen.

I suspected it would, too. But on the other hand, this is nothing more that apologetics by gun owners. The people moving this resolution, and the people on that board, have deep respect for the mourning families. However, pulling the resolution truly has little to do with that respect, and has everything to do with the notion of "apologizing" for owning firearms. As if somehow the fact that I own firearms and support their lawful and responsible ownership and use is linked to causation for the crime in DeKalb. I suspect a lot of people would be glad for us to think that way. They want gun owners embarassed about these things. It saddens me, in a way, because what happened in DeKalb has nothing to do with the resolution in McHenry. Nothing at all. We are not to blame for the criminal actions of the man at NIU....and don't you dare let your friends, aquaintences, the media and powers that be try to convince you that it's your fault because you are a gun owner.

Could'nt have said it better, GF. Why should we apologize for something we did not do? I feel it not only unappropriate, but also dishonest! I want it passed out of respect for the Constitution!

Now we know whose decision it was to take it off the McHenry County agenda. I've emphasized the part that I find particularly disturbing.

County board postpones vote on anti-gun control law

A symbolic resolution opposing new gun control measures by the state legislature is off the McHenry County Board's agenda this week as a result of Thursday's tragedy at Northern Illinois University.

County Board Chairman Ken Koehler, an NIU alumnus and booster, exercised his power to remove the proposal from Tuesday night's board agenda, saying it would be inappropriate given the events in DeKalb.

"We would have been debating this before many of those kids were buried," Koehler said. "It wouldn't be respectful."

The resolution opposes "the enactment of any legislation that would infringing upon the right of the people to keep and bear arms." The county board's Law and Justice Committee approved the measure last week and the full county board was poised to do the same Tuesday night.

But after Thursday's shootings left six dead and another 16 injured at Northern Illinois, Koehler contacted County Administrator Peter Austin and had the item taken off the agenda.

The shootings hit home for Koehler. Not only is he an alumnus and supporter, but his children graduated and taught at the university, and many friends and associates have children attending classes there now.

That list includes the son of former county board Chairman Mike Tryon, now a state representative, and the daughter of current county board member Randy Donley.

"Both of my sons were teaching assistants in the same lecture hall where the tragedy took place, so it hit me pretty hard," Koehler said.

It is not clear when, or if, the anti-gun control resolution will come before the full board.

Sixty-six counties outside the collar counties and the Oswego Township board in Kendall County have approved the measure, according to Illinois Pro 2A, the umbrella organization promoting the effort.

Two county board members from Pike and Brown counties in west central Illinois started the movement and promoted it at last year's Illinois Gun Owners Lobby Day in Springfield. Organizers see it as a way to speak out against a recent series of gun restrictions proposed by state lawmakers, such as proposals to ban private sales of handguns and imprint serial numbers on all ammunition.

One of the group's leaders, Pike County Board Chairman Mark Mountain, said Saturday he agrees with Koehler's decision.

"I think it's out of respect (to the victims)," he said. "There needs to be a time to grieving."

Elgin resident and self-described Second Amendment advocate Jack "Vince" Forbes of Elgin asked the Kane County Board last week to pass the resolution.

Forbes said the resolution is symbolic.

"Obviously it has no force of law as do most resolutions," said Forbes, a spokesman for IllinoisCarry.com, a group that advocates laws that allow citizens to carry concealed weapons. "A lot of county boards say it's not county business. But in essence it is. They've sworn an oath, too, to uphold the Constitution."

Board Chairman Karen McConnaughay referred the measure to the board's legislative committee, which meets later this month.

Posted

Just received an email from the chairman of the Kane County Legislative committee. He has stated he has been unaware of this issue until now and will need information and fact finding on both sides. This issue will be taken up later this year.

I believe more board members need input from their constituents! One or two county residents is not going to get this through in Kane. We need several from each district at the least. Contact anyone in Kane that you know, friends of friends.

In the mean time keep the green creeping up to the collar counties!

Well The DeWitt county mailings went out last night. SO far 6 of the 12 members have been asked what their thoughts were on the movement. Of the 6, 5 were anxious to see the resolution. That is the good news  Now let's just hope this unstable ex student and his untimley actions will not throw a wrench in the gears :P

The argument should be - "See what can happen when the state decalres "gun fee zones" and removes the means for us to protect ourselves? The police are under no obligation to protect the individual citizen and 911 calls are always after the fact. DeWitt County cannot allow it's citizens to become victims of violent crime at the whim of biased legislators who do not honor the Constitution they swore to uphold and defend. Will the county board also violate their oath of office?

All the more reason to pass the resolution before any more carnage like this takes place.?
