Eric D. Posted September 24, 2017 at 02:41 AM Share Posted September 24, 2017 at 02:41 AM I recently purchases a Savage Axis II rifle. It seems to be pretty accurate (I haven't had a chance to do much with it) and it was a good deal (Gander Mountain going-out-of business sale), but it's a basic gun and probably one of the ugliest firearms ever made. I'd like to replace the gun's stock with something a bit sturdier that doesn't look so cheap. I've looked at some aftermarket stocks, and Boyds Stocks look pretty good. Unfortunately, the on-line reviews of Boyds are all over the map, and most are not too flattering. Has anyone ordered from Boyds directly, or from anyone who carries their products (e.g., Optics Planet)? I'm thinking specifically of this stock: http://www.boydsgunstocks.com/ProductDetail/43a374d06112_featherweight-thumbhole-savage-axis-detachable-box-mag-short-action-factory-barrel-channel--pepper
Scotty425 Posted September 24, 2017 at 02:56 AM Share Posted September 24, 2017 at 02:56 AM Boyd's stocks are great! I have two, one on a 10/22 and the other is on a Mosin . Like you, I scored very good deals on two Ruger American rifles. Both will be upgraded to Boyd's stocks soon.
rmart Posted September 24, 2017 at 12:33 PM Share Posted September 24, 2017 at 12:33 PM I put a Boyd's stock on the Marlin .22 I put together for my daughter. It wasn't a perfect drop-in fit but pretty close. I had to do a little tweaking to make sure everything worked. I'm happy with it.Looking to get a set of Boyd's stocks for an 870 I'm putting together for my son.
Chuck43 Posted September 24, 2017 at 04:24 PM Share Posted September 24, 2017 at 04:24 PM I restocked a Remington 700 BDL using that same stock in nutmeg. The fit was perfect, you couldn't ask for any better.

Scotty425 Posted September 24, 2017 at 06:25 PM Share Posted September 24, 2017 at 06:25 PM Luckydawg, I wish I could, but its still a work in progress. I can tell you that it is a pepper laminate Prairie Hunter. Right now the barrel and action are off getting Cerakoted,

InterestedBystander Posted September 24, 2017 at 07:54 PM Share Posted September 24, 2017 at 07:54 PM Didnt we have a prior thread where Boyds refused to ship product to Illinois? Never used them (although have come close) but Optics Planet gets mixed reviews. If item is in stock, things generally go well, but it sounds like they will sell when not in stock and then the communication, updates, and delivery issues can start. I've read some call first to make sure they really have it. IIRC, they have a Chicago suburban facility but don't know if it's a warehouse and one can take delivery or simply a business address. edit: http://illinoiscarry.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=64948 ...they would not ship a Ruger 10/22 stock to Illinois because it can be considered "an assault gun" part and that they are banned in Illinois. ... rmart Posted September 24, 2017 at 10:07 PM Share Posted September 24, 2017 at 10:07 PM Optics Planet is in Northbrook and you can sometimes call them up and ask if you can do a walk-in and pick-up but they don't typically do that nor do they have a showroom. They're also fairly secure and will keep you waiting in the lobby while they get your item. I've done that twice because I worked near there but I don't think that's typical. Eric D. Posted September 25, 2017 at 01:15 AM Author Share Posted September 25, 2017 at 01:15 AM Thanks for the feedback. I probably won't go through Optics Planet. I'm not near Northbrook, and don't want to wait forever if they don't have the item in stock. I'm hoping my 7mm/08 with a 4-round magazine isn't an "assault gun." I'll probably order the stock this week. If it works out well, I may get another for my 93R17 GV. Its stock actually looks nice, but the gun could look better. Dcompton Posted September 25, 2017 at 07:06 PM Share Posted September 25, 2017 at 07:06 PM Boyds shipped my Savage stock to me without issue. They make a good product and have good service. Here is my DIY biathlon style target rifle.
Eric D. Posted September 26, 2017 at 01:21 AM Author Share Posted September 26, 2017 at 01:21 AM Looks great! After seeing your picture, I placed an order for the thumbhole stock in nutmeg. I originally thought the black/grey would look better, but I think it looks better with a natural wood look. Yours certainly isn't a natural wood look, but it still retains a lot of the natural coloring. My order should ship on October 2nd. I paid $4 extra for 3 day UPS. I might have gotten the bad end of that deal. There's a good chance normal shipping time is only 2 days from SD, but I wanted to make sure it would be here in time for the following weekend. luckydawg13 Posted September 26, 2017 at 11:11 AM Share Posted September 26, 2017 at 11:11 AM that look's nice did it just drop right in or did you have to adjust the stock
Dcompton Posted September 26, 2017 at 11:20 PM Share Posted September 26, 2017 at 11:20 PM For the most part it dropped right in. I had to make a small relief cut for where the rear diopter peep mount extends past where a standard action would. Other than that, which was an issue on my end not theirs, she dropped in and locked up like butter. I went with an aftermarket bottom metal set-up which also fit perfectly. I have ZERO complaints at all and in fact I am getting ready to order another one for a 338 project.
Eric D. Posted September 27, 2017 at 12:25 AM Author Share Posted September 27, 2017 at 12:25 AM I got a notification that my order was ready to ship this afternoon. From past experience, that means the vendor had UPS assign a tracking number to the order, and it'll actually ship in one to 30 days (no joke, I've seen it). I just looked at the status, and it did indeed ship today, with an anticipated delivery before the end of the day Thursday. Wow! That's awesome. rmart Posted October 11, 2017 at 03:29 AM Share Posted October 11, 2017 at 03:29 AM Just ordered a new set of stocks for an 870. They had just changed their website and they're still getting the kinks worked out so I had to do the order over the phone. My order is slightly custom with an upgraded recoil pad and some checkering. They told me I should see the order in about 10 days or so. We'll see and I'll let you know.
Eric D. Posted October 13, 2017 at 05:26 PM Author Share Posted October 13, 2017 at 05:26 PM Being off-the-shelf, mine did ship right away and was at my doorstep in three days. It was a perfect fit (no filing necessary), and looks/feels great.
