Ol'Coach Posted July 12, 2008 at 02:44 PM Posted July 12, 2008 at 02:44 PM Am I correct that the chairs were set up to hold 150 people? If so, some media estimates of 200 people?? Duh I believe 1000+.

Ashdump Posted July 12, 2008 at 05:25 PM Posted July 12, 2008 at 05:25 PM I'm also curious to know if there were any protesters present. I didn't see a single one, but at some point, I thought I heard someone shout out something "anti" as they quickly disappeared into the Thopson center. Some heads turned for a second....nothing more than a miniscule distraction. that was about it from where I was standing..... No, that was a guy from DSA shouting "It was us!" when one of the speakers said that jackson protested some gun mfg's. I did see a woman wearing an obama hat looking all around wondering what we were doing, but I did'nt see any protesters.
oneshot Posted July 12, 2008 at 05:57 PM Posted July 12, 2008 at 05:57 PM The anti's stayed away because they knew if they showed up the media would have paid attention. Kind of the anti-Ron Paul tactic, if you ignore him, he'll go away. Gotta hand it to them... (and that isn't meant to detract from the organizers efforts at all, just the fact that any news people showed up indicates a tremendous effort on their part! Way to go guys and girls! )

I heard that one. didn't you hear something else? I thought it was when the gentleman from nra-ila was up? if you are correct, then there was absolutly NO-NONE-NADA protesters

Is a presence like that in any way strategic or effective?

(no, I won't tell you which ones. ) I now have more incentive to get in shape. Lots of great shots, btw.

Sorry I couldn't drive up from Indy to help--I'm stuck in the Sandbox for another 60ish days. I'll be up that way in November, though, if anyone wants to meet up. Here's Thing One by herself, courtesy of Oleg. http://olegvolk.net/gallery/d/2779-4/pinkrifles0511.jpg

45superman Posted July 13, 2008 at 09:09 AM Posted July 13, 2008 at 09:09 AM Sorry I couldn't drive up from Indy to help--I'm stuck in the Sandbox for another 60ish days. Thank you for your service, MadMike. Be safe over there--you obviously have a lot to come home to. Welcome aboard, by the way.
Lou Posted July 13, 2008 at 12:19 PM Posted July 13, 2008 at 12:19 PM Thank you for your service Sir. It is greatly appreciated! Welcome to the board and be safe.
MadMike Posted July 13, 2008 at 01:30 PM Posted July 13, 2008 at 01:30 PM Thank you for your service Sir. It is greatly appreciated! Welcome to the board and be safe. Thanks. This is my second short tour, first was Desert Fox in 99. I'll forward the thanks to our power boss, who's on his 10th rotation--1400 days in theater since Sep 11, and to our youngest Airman (20) and oldest (59), and to any wounded who come through (none yet). I'm actually quite comfortable by comparison, even to wireless internet (most of the time, when the power's good and the locals cooperate) and stuck on base most of the time. Sure is hot, though.
mikew Posted July 13, 2008 at 02:02 PM Posted July 13, 2008 at 02:02 PM [snip]I did see a woman wearing an obama hat looking all around wondering what we were doing, but I didn't see any protesters.I gave her a bottle of water and talked to her for a while, nice lady. She lived in the city and wanted to get another hand gun [original was gone or something]. I tried to point out that the object of her presidential desires wasn't too keen on that.
Fido Posted July 13, 2008 at 02:24 PM Posted July 13, 2008 at 02:24 PM Hey Madmike! Thank you so much for your service! And PLEASE send a HUGE thank you to your power boss for us. What an incredible sacrifice he is making for us all. We definately appreciate it.
canonelan2 Posted July 13, 2008 at 03:20 PM Posted July 13, 2008 at 03:20 PM I'm still looking for video of the entire Hupp speech. Anyone record it?
MadMike Posted July 13, 2008 at 03:36 PM Posted July 13, 2008 at 03:36 PM I think he's nuts. He got a coin from AFCENT commander and another from the Chairman, JCS. I'm going to have to think very hard about another rotation. I'm pretty well sick of engineering the desert. "You may experience a slight burning sensation." It's like Groundhog Day--115 degrees, winds NNW at 20 mph, sandy, dusty, sunny, every @#$ing day. Same shift. Same crappy local power (240 V that varies from 199 to 280), same crappy local supplies, same failures, same berm, same duty, same people, same threat warnings... On topic: I'm better armed at home in IN than here. All I have here is one (1) GAU 5PP (USAF version of the M4, A2 sights and a Happy Switch instead of Burst), and a bayonet and pocket knife I had to furnish myself--and the bayonet requires a letter from the commander to transport, because Host Nation for our departure won't allow EXPORT of any knife over 6". Back home I have everything up to a belt fed Browning
Ol'Coach Posted July 13, 2008 at 09:44 PM Posted July 13, 2008 at 09:44 PM Ahhh, yes...good ol' Indiana! Wish I could convince the wife to move there! (Still would support the Fightin' Illini!)
bubbahana Posted July 13, 2008 at 11:23 PM Posted July 13, 2008 at 11:23 PM Photo Update.... Alright I had some requests for copies so I changed the permissions to what I originally intended to set them to.All of my photos from SAFR are now available for download in multiple sizes as well as their original full resolution. And here is the link to my photos again.

I tried to point out that the object of her presidential desires wasn't too keen on that. I had a nice conversation with lady who mentioned that she lived for 12 years in Isreal where they have VERY realistic firearms regulations {read - minimal} and she felt very uncomfortable living defenseless in Chicago as opposed to being in Isreal where they are surrounded by enemies 24/7. Where was a camera/mike when I needed one?!?!?!?!? Her is a link to Dr. Hupp and her reaction to our tongue depressors.
MadMike Posted July 14, 2008 at 02:17 AM Posted July 14, 2008 at 02:17 AM Israel's "realistic" regulations are that ONLY reservists can have a military rifle, and a business owner may have ONE, LICENSED, REGISTERED PISTOL if he jumps through hoops, and certain people are allowed the privilege of owning hunting weapons. And if you are not Jewish it will be much harder, if not Jewish or Christian just about impossible. IOW: Enough to make the Brady Bunch reasonably happy.

MadMike Posted July 14, 2008 at 02:28 AM Posted July 14, 2008 at 02:28 AM No, not everyone is reserve. It's large, but if you don't qualify for military service, you won't. And they're quite strict on ammo sales, too. Dave Kopel (IIRC) did an extensive article on Israel's laws. I wouldn't enjoy them.
Don Gwinn Posted July 14, 2008 at 04:35 AM Posted July 14, 2008 at 04:35 AM On the question of the number of chairs, there should have been roughly 105 chairs. There were 120 total, and I believe 5 were used at the NRA table while 10 more were used for the speakers. Somehow, we ended up returning 122 out of 120 chairs to the Thompson Center at the end. I still don't know how we managed that one.
Druid Posted July 14, 2008 at 04:43 AM Posted July 14, 2008 at 04:43 AM That podcaster who spoke, Sean Horton, has all the audio playing on his webpage: http://www.militantmarksman.libsyn.com/ Listening to it gets me all happy again
wyldejackyl Posted July 17, 2008 at 06:07 PM Posted July 17, 2008 at 06:07 PM You saw her too? I had to stop and do a double take..that's not the usual type of person to be at these events. Hi, My daughter and I were about 15 feet to the right of this young lady, and she was indeed quite attractive. But she also was attentive, clapped appropriately, stayed for most of the rally, and seemed genuinely engaged in what was going on. In short, exactly the kind of participation we were hoping for from folks outside our immediate circle. But think about what has just been said here. And then think about what it says about (and to) the other female members and supporters we have. I know we're a bunch of adults, and this is sort of in good fun. But let's be respectful, OK? FWIW from an old-fashioned guy.... Rich Phillips Noted. I was indeed surprised to see her.

You need to smack your UDM.
