abolt243 Posted February 20, 2008 at 03:31 PM Share Posted February 20, 2008 at 03:31 PM The call in against the bills in the Executive Committee in the house is working!!!! Of the nice ladies I've talked to, as soon as I tell them I'm in oppostition to some bills, they know exactly which bills I'm calling about. They comment on the number of calls that they're getting, and seem to be very pleased that someone is calling about bills. Here's what works for me, modify to fit your own style. Be brief, polite, and use your "inside voice, Church language". These ladies are more than likely on your side and seem to be very happy to visit with you. If they initiate a "conversation", visit with them. It will help dispell the myth of the "gun nut". Call these offices: Executive Committee Hearing Feb 21 2008 11:00AM Capitol Building Room 118 Springfield, IL Chairperson : Daniel J. Burke (217) 782-1117 Vice-Chairperson : Joseph M. Lyons (217) 782-8400 Republican Spokesperson : Dan Brady (217) 782-1118Member: Edward J. Acevedo (217) 782-2855 Member: Maria Antonia Berrios (217) 558-1032 Member: Bob Biggins (217) 782-6578Member: Richard T. Bradley (217) 782-8117 Member: Brent Hassert (217) 782-4179 Member: James H. Meyer (217) 782-8028 Member: Robert S. Molaro (217) 782-5280 Member: Robert Rita (217) 558-1000 Member: Angelo Saviano (217) 782-3374 Member: Arthur L. Turner (217) 782-8116 I use these words: "I'm calling to express opposition to several bills that are coming before the Executive Committee tommorrow. I have the bill numbers here: 758; 4217; 4259; 4349; 4357; 4393; 4628. Thank you for taking my call. Have a nice day". That's all there is to it!!! Guys, I spent the first 40 years of my adult life in LaLa land, not caring what went on in Springfield. So did thousands of others. That's why we've got the mess we've got now. Everybody, especially you "younger guys" get on your cell phones, call the numbers above and express opposition. That's the only way we'll get this turned around. Thanks for your time.AB

Abolt, my friend, I'm thinkin' what you have done in the last year has more than made for that! Besides, it took me 'bout 65 yrs to wake up! Edit: Made my calls. One office person: "Oh, yes, the encoding bills! ...hundreds of calls the last two days...so many I've stopped taking names, just adding to the total...hopefully this will work out for you guys!" Abolt, my friend, I'm thinkin' what you have done in the last year has more than made for that! Besides, it took me 'bout 65 yrs to wake up! Thanks Coach. Lots more ground to make up, but I'm gettin' there!! I've called everyone on the list this morning except one who's phone is so busy I can't get through!!!! EVERY office has commented on the number of calls they're getting on these bills, several have told me that they've done nothing but answer the phone about these bills. Most know the numbers before I read them off. When I started making calls like this last summer, I'd never called a political office before. I was very tentative, very afraid that whoever would answer the phone would want to discuss the bill in question and I would come off sounding like a dummy! All those fears are unfounded. All of the office staff have been very friendly, very willing to take my name, town and my list of bills that I oppose and pass it on to the legislator!! Simple as pie!! We'll see after the committee meeting tomorrow, but if these folks pay any attention at all to the citizens of this state, those bills won't get out of committee!! Keep the calls going and your fingers crossed!! AB
SmershAgent Posted February 20, 2008 at 05:24 PM Share Posted February 20, 2008 at 05:24 PM Calls made. Most of the people with whom I spoke said their offices have received literally hundreds of calls. I asked one woman if she had an inclination as to whether or not the bills would pass out of the committee, and she said, "most likely they're not even going to be read." I suspect that may just mean another delay, but it's still a good sign. If you haven't called yet, please be sure to do so. It is very important that these Representatives hear opposition from as many citizens as possible.

wazzle Posted February 20, 2008 at 06:41 PM Share Posted February 20, 2008 at 06:41 PM That took a whole 10 minutes. Same responses from the secretaries about number of calls.
Johnnybgood Posted February 20, 2008 at 06:42 PM Share Posted February 20, 2008 at 06:42 PM Wow! I was snickering with almost every call. They knew which bills and were being inundated with opposition. Way to go everyone!

EnjoyLife Posted February 20, 2008 at 07:25 PM Share Posted February 20, 2008 at 07:25 PM I went and called them all as well. Bradley's phone was busy both times I tried, and Hassert's phone disconnected me both times I tried. Everyone else took my information and one even said they haven't had even one person call in that wasn't opposing the bill.

Richard Bradley's phone must be off the hook, but his fax is working. 217-558-6369 His phone works now. But since I've already composed the letter I was going to fax, I think I'll just fax it later. He just as well hear from me twice!!! AB Edited to add: Great job guys!!! Keep it up!!! Gives you a good feeling doesn't it??? C'mon the rest of you. Even if it's after office hours, most of them have machines, just leave a short message with your name, town and a statement that you oppose the bills. Fill up their machines overnight!![
GWBH Posted February 20, 2008 at 07:39 PM Share Posted February 20, 2008 at 07:39 PM Rep. Richard Bradley's phone must be off the hook, but his fax is working. 217-558-6369 Nice job there Mr abolt243 - thanks for keeping us all informed. Yep - They must have Rep Bradley's busied out as I couldn't get through either. The nice lady at Rep Lyons office mentioned they'd taken hundreds of calls in opposition to the bills and had only taken 1 call supporting them.I had the same response as others - they already knew why I was calling so used that as an opportunity to cut up with all of the Reps assistants and had a really good time just talking with them. C'mon here people - let's get on those phones!! abolt has already done all the leg work for us!!
Kaeghl Posted February 20, 2008 at 07:56 PM Share Posted February 20, 2008 at 07:56 PM I just called most of the numbers before the dangedy-dang phone went on the fritz.( The new phone is coming tomorrow, I hope) From what I could gather, the secretaries have gotten something like 300 calls against these bills. In a couple of cases, just after I say I'm calling to voice opposition, they mention "The Ammo bills?" and I say "Of course."
sctman800 Posted February 20, 2008 at 08:02 PM Share Posted February 20, 2008 at 08:02 PM I have to head for work but just called everyone that would answer their phone. The secretary at Rep. Berrios office took my message and I usually add, The best thing to make Illinois safer would be to pass Concealed Carry. The Sec. said Berrios may not agree but she personally would agree. So I explaigned non-resident permits and told her to go to www.handgunlaw.us, Jim.
Lou Posted February 20, 2008 at 08:29 PM Share Posted February 20, 2008 at 08:29 PM I called yesterday and Bradley's secretary never let me get as far as the bill numbers. She knew which 7 I was talking about. She suggested I call the day after to see the outcome. She was a very pleasant lady and sounded like she was on our side. Just for added benefit I wrote a brief letter stating my opposition to the seven bills and listed them. I put the fax numbers in my computer yesterday and it was done before I could make a sandwich for lunch. dorvinion Posted February 20, 2008 at 09:08 PM Share Posted February 20, 2008 at 09:08 PM I'm not all that surprised that their assistants are friendly about it. They are Springfield area folks. Would probably get more huffing about tying up the Reps lines if we were calling their Chicago area offices.

That's what Delegate Friedrichs from Centralia said on the floor at the 1970 Constitutional Convention, shortly after they elected a Convention Pres from Chicago! (Replace "representatives" with "delegates".) They didn't pay much attention!
w00dc4ip Posted February 21, 2008 at 05:21 AM Share Posted February 21, 2008 at 05:21 AM Called all the numbers today, same response as everyone else. Then, just for fun, called Biggins' local number since he's my rep. Whoever answered the phone there struck up a little bit of a conversation, stating that he "doubts these bills are going anywhere given the amount of negative public response, more than any other bill he'd ever heard about". I asked if he'd heard anything about HB4544, he said no. I said, ok, then expect some calls to start coming in supporting HB4544. Keep dialing folks, they're getting the message loud and clear. w00dc4ip
