Flossmoor will consider an Assault Weapons Ban ordinance during it's regular meeting on Monday, July 15 in the Village Hall at 7:30pm

The agenda for the meeting can be found here:

The parts relevant to the "AWB" begin on page 43 and continue to page 54. There is not a firm ordinance for consideration at this time. It appears that a second special meeting would have to be called prior to adoption of an ordinance.

Thanks for posting. Seems they are giving it a little more thought and opening it up for discussion as opposed to their neighbors in Homewood who just steam rolled it through without any discussion or notification to the members of their community.

I plan to attend this meeting (along with my wife), and I intend to speak against the AWB ordinance. As a relatively new transplant to Illinois, I have not attended a town meeting here before. Should I plan to speak during the initial period when Citizens may address the Board, or should I wait until the Board gets to the AWB at agenda item number 3? I don't want to miss my opportunity by waiting, but I'd prefer to speak at the most opportune time.

Any advice would be welcome. I hope to meet some of you there.

I'm looking at their agenda now. It calls for discussion (not consideration) of the AWB as item #3. They've done a lot of research and there appears to be uncertainty about proceeding with this, including questioning whether non-home rule communities can pass a ban (I don't believe Flossmoor is home rule) and suggesting that it might be better handled a the state level.

I think those who choose to speak should do so with the idea of helping the board better understand the issue.

Flossmoor is not "home rule." The village profile explicitly says so here (page 3):

I will take your counsel Mauserme and try to politely keep the board from opting to hold a vote on an "AWB." I think that you are correct that they are proposing a rather considered approach that welcomes real, substantive discussion rather than staking out an extreme position.

The trustees opened the discussion by asking whether they had the authority to pass such an ordinance. Mayor Braun voiced his apprehension at the legality of an AWB ordinance by a non-home-rule municipality, but clearly stated that he was in favor for the ban on political grounds. Prior to discussion by residents, Trustee Perry Hoag asked for a poll of the board to see if there was any support whatsoever for an AWB ordinance. There was no support from any Trustee. Trustees Minga and Mitros made particularly poignant points about being against an AWB and the possible litigation costs involved. Mayor Braun asked if anyone in the audience wanted to speak in light of there being no support to even attempt to draft an AWB. Citizens thanked the board for their thoughtful discussion, but no one spoke. After this agenda item, about 15-20 folks left the room.

Flossmoor will not direct the village attorney to draft an AWB ordinance.

Well what do you know, I am registered.... Hello, it was good to meet all of you there. I am the copper that was there with my wife. I would like to say that while forums are a good place to read posts, you never get to meet the persons behind it. Ya, its the PO in me that likes the face to face contact.

we are glad that Flossmoor decided not to do anything. We had a really compelling story to tell and facts to back it up with. We really feel that the 2A in no way ever was written to regulate what type of firearm that an American could own.

Been a busy day for me and we are still going to post about our sister that was taken from us by a career violent criminal offender. It just takes time for us to put it down in words. In person, its a much more real and we are allowed to express ourselves.

We promise to post more, listen alot and keep our mouth shut when we need to (ok, that one wont happen. LOL)

Again, it was great to meet you all!!!

No problem. That was a good idea you had........

I couldn't believe that happened to me in front of my son like that. Thanks.
