DoYouFeelLucky Posted May 13, 2018 at 02:26 AM Share Posted May 13, 2018 at 02:26 AM I went to the Brownell's Gun Adoption event today (well really, just another trip to the LGS!) and came home with a new S&W 629 5" barrel in .44 mag. Not seeing as many choices in holsters as I would of thought. Looking for leather, OWB, something that will work to carry it during hunting/fishing/hiking. Kingcreek Posted May 13, 2018 at 12:11 PM Share Posted May 13, 2018 at 12:11 PM I have a 5" 629 black leather holster I got from Dillon precision. Might have been made by Kramer. It's a good holster and comfortable but I don't carry it much. Strong side, straight drop. For hunting I went with a chest rig.
jim schad Posted May 13, 2018 at 03:18 PM Share Posted May 13, 2018 at 03:18 PM There'll be a wait, but have three of these that I've used for about ten years now... Very happy with them and how they've held up with the daily use for about five or six years of the ten. Horsehide is what I'm recommending as it is stiffer and seems to hold up better than the cow hide. http://kramerleather.com/productDetail.cfm?productID=18&categoryID=
DoYouFeelLucky Posted May 16, 2018 at 04:47 AM Author Share Posted May 16, 2018 at 04:47 AM Thanks for the recommendations! I found a Bianchi leather holster on sale at Midway which will get me by for now. I will be checking into your recommendations for a longer term solution. Neumann Posted May 27, 2018 at 05:00 AM Share Posted May 27, 2018 at 05:00 AM Just about any holster for an N-frame Smith will fit your 629. A pancake holster (Grizzle, Alessi) gives good concealment under a medium length jacket. The butt is held tightly to your side. A 5" barrel is too long, IMO, for IWB carry. A heavy revolver like your 629 is very comfortable to carry in a shoulder rig, and easily concealed under a light jacket or vest (I carry concealed in the woods as to not alarm the tourists). Alessi is a good place to start. If concealment is not a concern, then a holster with a drop and offset is out of the way and very quick to bring a long barrel into action. Western style holsters by El Paso Leather are good, or a duty holster from Safariland. Bianchi, Galco and other mass-produced holsters are okay in a pinch, but the leather is thin, they take a lot of break-in, they ride high but don't fit the belt tightly (drag up).
