Well I have been back and forth with the Board for almost a year now. So if any dupage residents could just contact their two board members with a short, simple and to the point email it would show them that there is support for this measure from all the districts.

 

This was the third member of the board I have been in contact with about the resolution. He just got elected at the age of 22 as the first democrat. He mentioned that another board member mentioned it too him which is a good sign. I just sent him a copy of the resolution and hope that the fact even a democrat is supportive of it, then all the republicans will feel safe to jump aboard.

 

Ive said it before, Dupage would be the biggest realistic win we could get and it would jump the percentage of the state population living in green counties quite a bit .

Just an update: I think the newly-elected have had enough time to warm up their new chairs so I'm going to start giving the Pro 2A Resolution more of my attention now. Trying to take stock in where we are I sent out a couple of emails and got a reply back from Knox county this morning (below).

 

Mr. Roberts,

 

One of our new Board Members has a strong interest in promoting this Resolution in our County. He is planning on bringing it to our Board for a vote this month. I don't see much of a problem getting the Board to approve. I will keep you up to date on its progress.

Do any of you know a board member personally? Or know someone that does? Ask around. Perhaps you could arrange a personal meeting. If they have a business, there is the pop in and inquire method. Be sure to have all your materials and mention the Sheriff's resolution.

Let's get back to work on this! What better time, than with the ISA passing its resolution?!

 

I'm no longer a positive when it comes to FTF conversation with antis, but I can still write letters.

For two years, while 87 other counties in Illinois have passed a 2nd Amendment Resolution supporting the 2nd Amendment rights of law-aiding citizens in Illinois, the Champaign County Board has insisted, “It isn’t a county matter.” For whatever its reasons, it has chosen to align itself with Cook County!

 

On February 3rd, 2009, the Illinois Sheriffs’ Association passed a resolution supporting the right of the law-abiding citizens of Illinois to carry a firearm for self defense. If a license to carry bill, as supported by the ISA, were to be passed by the Illinois General Assembly, Illinois would finally join 48 other states that already have license to carry laws.

 

I believe that County Sheriffs represent the citizens within their counties.

 

Question is, does the Champaign County Board?

 

Champaign County can align itself with its citizens’ natural rights, or it can continue to claim, “It isn’t a county matter”

Find out who your board members are and send them a friendly, short and to the point email. If they do decide to bring it to committee, then come out and show your support. I have been talking to Sheahan, Redick, and Michelassi about the resolution so may want to send an email to one or all of them. Perhaps sending one to the Chairman would help too.

Letters sent on 2/6/09 to my district's three board members and the board president.

I got the same response I gotten every other time I've contacted them on this subject- they will not even honor this voter with a "Get Lost" letter. :Angry!:

 

It sounds like the DuPage County has taken the ostrich approach - bury their sorry heads in the sand and just ignore the issue.

 

Coach - I can sure understand how frustrated you are with Champaign County.

We need all the help we can get in DuPage. I've been writing to the county board for YEARS and other than an initial "blow-off" letter from Schillerstrom I cannot even get my board members to even answer my letters. The board seems to be taking the ostrich approach and ignoring that we even exist.

 

It's almost time to show up that a board meeting with torches and pitchforks to get them to notice us.

I'll just go ahead and re-affirm. The letter for Douglas Co. is basically done. I'm going ahead and start getting some signatures this week and especially this weekend. I am meeting with the one board member to show him the letter and what we're doing this coming Saturday or Sunday (work pending).

He and I had hoped to get this straightened out and get it up for a vote in Mar or April.

The Knox County Board passed a resolution of support Wednesday for the constitutionally guaranteed right to bear arms, with the intent of sending an unequivocal message to those who would seek to curtail those rights.

 

The motion was introduced by Bernie Damm, D-District 1, who said it was important the county make its position clear, in the face of what he saw as attempts from Chicago politicians to put restrictions on gun owners.

 

Damm’s motion referred to proposed legislation in both the Illinois House and Senate, which he said could ban the possession of some firearms, which are currently legal. The motion opposed the “enaction of any legislation that would impinge on the right to bear arms.”

 

Wayne Saline, R-District 4 backed the motion. “The city of Chicago, at the state level, is passing laws on a daily basis limiting the use of guns,” he said. “We need to support this (motion) because it is our right.”

 

Saline’s sentiments were echoed by County Board Chairman Greg Bacon. “We need to protect the rights we were given at the start by our forefathers,” he said.

 

Several County Board members thought the motion of support for Second Amendment rights on the board’s agenda was concerned with concealed carry laws, which are the subject of a bill before the Illinois House.

 

“At this point in time, it is appropriate that we do this,” Damm said, answering questions about the need for the motion. “We are constantly deluged, particularly from the Chicago area, with anti-gun bills.”

 

Three board members, Allen Pickrel, R-District 1, Paul Stewart, D-District 2, and Lyle Johnson, D-District 1, voted against the motion. All of the other board members present voted in favor of the resolution.

 

Pickrel said the motion was too expansive. “This is too broad for me,” he said. “I support guns for recreational use, but this expands it too far.”

 

The motion stated that it was the citizens of Knox County’s “inalienable right” to “derive economic benefit” using “all types of firearms allowed” by the law.

 

Johnson said he had no problem with concealed carry law, but that the motion referred to bills in the state legislature about which he didn’t know enough to pass judgment on. He also said he had already sworn on the Constitution, meaning he didn’t need to reaffirm his support for Second Amendment rights. Stewart said he supported “reasonable restrictions” on firearms.

 

Damm used a quote he attributed to Nazi leader Adolf Hitler to demonstrate why, in his view, restrictions on firearm use or ownership could be dangerous. The quote states: “1935 will go down in history. For the first time, a civilized nation has full gun registration. Our streets will be safer, our police more efficient and the world will follow our lead to the future.”

 

In other business Wednesday, the County Board appointed former board member Jerry Link to the County Board of Zoning Appeals, where he will replace Joe Krupps. “Jerry will be a great asset to the Board of Zoning Appeals,” County Board Chairman Greg Bacon said. “He has a wealth of knowledge.”

 

Ken Hutchenrider, CEO of Galesburg Cottage Hospital, was appointed to the Orpheum Theatre Board.

 

Nursing Home Administrator Marianne Wiesen’s contract was extended to December 2010, with no increase in salary or benefits.

 

County Board members saluted outgoing Knox County Health Board administrator Greg Chance, who is leaving to take up a similar post in Peoria. Bacon joked, “He runs a damn good health department. I did everything I could to make him stay short of getting him arrested and I’m working on that.”

 

The county signed a deal with energy company Integrys to provide electricity to all county buildings for the next two years. The agreement should create substantial savings to the taxpayer, according to Saline.

 

The board approved a bid of $61,316 to supply a generator to the nursing home.
