Amirahsdaddy19 Posted December 18, 2021 at 01:03 AM Posted December 18, 2021 at 01:03 AM Hi everyone. I'm new to the forums, but I've searched to find anyone else with a similar situation. I had a hospital admission back in the nineties which caused my FOID to be revoked for the mental health less than five years status. Sometime after the five years I applied and regained my rights. I've had FOID since, now going on twenty years. Even had an address change done a little over a year ago. Long story short, my FOID was never revoked and I haven't been contacted by ISP concerning the new law. Question is, do my rights remain restored, or do I have to retroactively go through the process of getting them reinstated again?
Molly B. Posted December 18, 2021 at 02:22 AM Posted December 18, 2021 at 02:22 AM Technically, you had your rights restored back then and it should not change your status now, you should be good. However, we have seen some blips when a renewal is submitted and old records turn up. Please let us know if you run into problems.

Sets my mind at ease, seeing as I recently plunked down a significant amount for the concealed carry class and all. I figured that was the case, but I never want to end up on the wrong side of the law. Even a law that might make sense on paper, but it's dangerous because it may keep people from getting the help they need when they need it. Thanks again for all you do.
matth825 Posted December 27, 2021 at 05:59 PM Posted December 27, 2021 at 05:59 PM I was in this same situation. My FOID was reissued back in 2012. I believe the “after 5 year requirements” law was passed in 2013. I’ve had several address changes (and firearm purchases) since then with the most recent address change in July of 2021. I haven’t had any issues thus far. I’m up for renewal in October of 2022 so I’m keeping my fingers crossed and knocking on wood when that time arrives. I feel better knowing you have had yours for almost 20 years since you made it through 1 renewal without issue. Keep us updated on your CCL. I don’t know if applying for one changes the situation or causes issues. I wouldn’t think so but as Molly says blips happen.

I don't expect any movement on it any time soon due to the holidays. My FOID is due for renewal this year too, in March, but had no problems with an address change last year or any of the purchases I've made. Hopefully we won't have to deal with the hassle of losing the ID and having to get it back. I'll keep the forum informed as the process goes forward.
matth825 Posted December 28, 2021 at 03:01 PM Posted December 28, 2021 at 03:01 PM Thanks! I’ll stay tuned for updates on how it progresses. Hoping it all goes smoothly for you!

Took almost exactly the alloted 4 months for applications and certificates without prints if I figure in a few days for printing and mailing (November 14, 2021-March 26, 2022). So Matt,I think you'll be ok. I guess once anyone's sorted things out and gotten whatever help they need and got their rights restored, most will be fine. I really hope that's the case for everyone, as a person shouldn't have to weigh the consequences of losing a constitutional right against getting treatment. Wish you luck. Keep us updated with your success. Also, thank you Molly B., I'm glad I found this forum. You're spoken of very highly in the Illinois firearms subreddit. I appreciate all you do here and the wealth of information and data you make available here.
Molly B. Posted March 26, 2022 at 09:59 PM Posted March 26, 2022 at 09:59 PM Thank you for the kind words. We have great "family" here at IllinoisCarry.
matth825 Posted April 4, 2022 at 02:34 AM Posted April 4, 2022 at 02:34 AM Very happy it finally showed up! Thanks for the update. I agree, it’s ridiculous that this state makes us weight our rights against getting treatment. Hopefully one day that changes. Thank you for the wishes of luck! I’m encouraged now! I actually got the message today saying that I can renew my FOID card so I submitted the application. If that goes though without issues I’ll be enrolling in a concealed carry class as soon as I can. I’ll be sure to post updates. I too am very happy to have found this forum! It’s great to have a friendly community of firearm enthusiasts for this state. I appreciate all those who make it happen and keep it going. It really is a wealth of info!
matth825 Posted April 21, 2022 at 02:23 PM Posted April 21, 2022 at 02:23 PM Update…my FOID renewal was successful. It went active about a week and a half after I submitted the application. The new card showed up yesterday. Signed up concealed carry at the beginning of May.

Glad to hear you were successful and you're on your way to getting the CCL! Sounds like someone's got some shopping to do!
matth825 Posted April 23, 2022 at 07:44 PM Posted April 23, 2022 at 07:44 PM Thanks! I’m thankful it was successful. I’m optimistic about the CCL but don’t want to celebrate too early. It hasn’t stopped me from shopping for a decent IWB holster for my G19 and a sturdy belt though .
