kwc Posted June 25, 2015 at 01:59 AM Share Posted June 25, 2015 at 01:59 AM On one of my flights the agent insisted the firearm declaration form had to be inside the locked handgun case. On another, the agent gave me the option of either waiting in the baggage area for 15 minutes, or giving her the combination to my portable gun safe. (Of course, I declined the latter!). These incidents both happened with American Airlines in STL.
RoadyRunner Posted June 25, 2015 at 11:51 AM Share Posted June 25, 2015 at 11:51 AM Just returned from Orlando and and was able to experience in readable level of ignorance by the agent at the frontier airline desk. After declaring the firearm, the paper work went inside the case( same when I left ORD). Then the magic question from the agent, will you be checking the bag with the firearm or carrying it on with you. My wife an I just looked at each other and shook our heads and told her I would be checking the bag. The agent then said she would have to escort me to the TSA baggage check to make it gets on the plane properly. LOL, all on all it went well Just.... Wow... RacerDave6 Posted July 1, 2015 at 08:25 PM Share Posted July 1, 2015 at 08:25 PM I've found it different at every airport I've been through this year. (4 different ones so far). Midway is almost always the same (Southwest). First couple times I had to open the gun case, then close it and they tape the card to the outside of the gun case (all airports I've been to this year have taped the card to the outside of the gun case inside my checked bag). Recently (last 2 times I've flown) they don't even want the gun case opened. I suspect it's because they have no clue what they are looking at. Then it goes to TSA for a manual inspection. They are nice about it but I always have trouble at Midway. They don't like my case, saying it is too easy to pry open on one side, so I always end up putting a second lock on the case.My case is also cable locked to the interior framework of my suitcase. Some airports have you take it to TSA and they put it through the xray right in front of you. Some airports put it on the belt and say TSA will snag it and xray it later. Just remember to have non TSA locks on your gun case, and TSA locks on your checked bag.Never give up your keys or combination to locks. If they want to open it tell them it will be while you are present.
