danman Posted April 24, 2023 at 11:27 PM Share Posted April 24, 2023 at 11:27 PM hey guys, I'm currently 20 and looking to get my CCW class knocked out before I turn 21 (which my range says is totally allowed); however, it is rather difficult to take a CCW class when I can't buy a pistol until I'm 21. is there an easy and legal way to go about this? I have my FOID, and so does my dad, so would it be legal for him to buy the gun and gift it to me, so I can take the class? Thanks in advance for your help! (The reason I can't just do everything on/after my birthday is because I am in college out of state)
DaveIL Posted April 24, 2023 at 11:31 PM Share Posted April 24, 2023 at 11:31 PM (edited) He could “loan” you the pistol for the class, or find an instructor that provides pistols for the class. There are options. my Kid is 15 he can use pistols in my presence. You may need to find an instructor that has “tools for the class”. danman Posted April 24, 2023 at 11:34 PM Author Share Posted April 24, 2023 at 11:34 PM That was my only thought too. The straw purchasing laws in Illinois confuse me so I think I could just "loan" it until I turned 21, then buy it from him. Seem legit?
DaveIL Posted April 24, 2023 at 11:41 PM Share Posted April 24, 2023 at 11:41 PM There are some weird hunting laws that allow 16 or 18 and up to have hunting Handguns, I don’t know the specifics, but taking a 12 year old to the range and handing him a 1911 is ok.. this is him getting a 45 and trying to be cool. bosshogg Posted April 25, 2023 at 02:03 AM Share Posted April 25, 2023 at 02:03 AM I did it when I was 20 and applied on my birthday, had no issues. Many places will be willing to rent you a handgun for the class.
