To overcome the filibuster it would take first, ten Republicans who not only believe in a ban but also that this particular bill is the way to do it and, second, that don't care about the consequences of an affirmative vote or don't perceive that there would be negative political consequences.  I don't believe that combination can be found in the current makeup of the Senate.

Even those Republican senators who are retiring won't want to cross over for this. That was the whole purpose of the other bill, which was to vote for something completely watered-down and pointless, while still getting some credit for "doing something".

This ban goes too far for the sole purpose of a show vote.

As you say, the vote on the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act (S.2938) makes Republicans look reasonable on gun control to folks who favor it.  The Democrats can't allow that so a vote on the "Assault Weapons" ban was pushed.

Plus, Democrats looked like a bunch of losers after SCOTUS got done with their signature issues.  They can tell their base now that they are the same old bullies ignoring the Constitution that they've always been, even though that won't pan out for them in the long run.
