GarandFan Posted March 20, 2010 at 12:18 PM Posted March 20, 2010 at 12:18 PM Given this is a Washington Post editorial, it's pretty predictable ... Pentagon criminal Bedell isn't really of any concern ... but one of his guns certainly is. And as usual, the editors are here to teach us some lessons. Only their final paragraph makes any sense. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/03/19/AR2010031904620.html The Obama administration, missing in action on gun control Saturday, March 20, 2010 APPARENTLY, one of the weapons John Patrick Bedell used to shoot two Pentagon police officers this month was sold to a Georgia gun dealer by the Memphis Police Department, which had confiscated the weapon during a drug bust. The gun was sold several times more, including at a gun show in Nevada last year. Little is known about that gun-show purchaser because of giant loopholes in the law that allow unlicensed private vendors, or "hobbyists," to dispense with federally mandated background checks. A couple of lessons can be drawn. First, it is absurd for police departments to put guns back into circulation. The possibility of making a little bit of money from the sale of illegal weapons or swapping them for guns more suitable for law enforcement is not worth the cost in lives and safety. Police departments should put a halt to this practice; legally confiscated guns should be destroyed after they are no longer needed as evidence -- a measure endorsed by the International Association of Chiefs of Police. Second, there are steps the Obama administration could take immediately to reduce the danger to law enforcement officers and other law-abiding citizens. Legislation is needed to close the gun-show loophole to require background checks for all purchasers. But the 500-strong, bipartisan coalition Mayors Against Illegal Guns has outlined 40 steps that the Obama administration could take on its own to get illegal guns off the streets. The FBI should alert local officials when a would-be purchaser has failed a background check; such an alert would put local law enforcement officials on notice that a "prohibited purchaser" with a disqualifying criminal history or an outstanding domestic violence warrant is trying to obtain a weapon. The mayors' group sensibly urges the Justice Department to step up prosecutions of the most dangerous "prohibited purchasers," including convicted murders and rapists who by law are barred from owning weapons. The administration should also heed the mayors' call to crack down on illegal gun-show sales to criminals and straw purchasers.

Tvandermyde Posted March 20, 2010 at 04:20 PM Posted March 20, 2010 at 04:20 PM Coach -- from the last batch of stats I saw here in Illinis over a 1/4 and maybe 1/2 of the denials were from expired or cancelled FOIDs. Not that they were bad guys, but they forgot or didn't know that their foid had expired or lost it, got a new one then found the original and stuck it in their wallet. I don't think those are the guys we are after. Nor do we want to get guys to have similar last names jammed up becuase the state can't keep the records straight.
Buzzard Posted March 20, 2010 at 04:38 PM Posted March 20, 2010 at 04:38 PM If anyone can find a loophole, it's Obama. There's no one better at circumventing a system. Obama isn't concerned about gun control - YET. First he must win Health care Reform. That's a big voter gain for the Democrats. Then will come Immigration Reform and another voter windfall. Millions and millions of new voters indebted to the Democrats and ready to vote them into office. And finally, then with unstoppable momentum they will pass Universal Voter Registration. This will be the Democrats Election Winning Trifecta. With these three legislative bills they will render future elections to be a minor formality. The Democrats will have a lock on power that is unbreakable! Then they will simply ban guns and start rounding them up. Unconstitutional you say? Are they following the Constitution now??

And, the sad part is, by using the "Slaughter Rule" and other questionable tactics, all that can be done without a vote from Congress, or at least a true vote on the issue. We'll see where we stand on Monday. I can see some folks getting real upset if Health Care Reform goes as some predict. AB

Yep...that's just one of a couple of reasons why that statement is so ridiculous. ETA: Note that I changed the emoticon in my previous post.

AB I'm not so much worried about deem and pass, which is being dubbed the "Slaughter Solution", as I believe it to be unlawful under the Constitution. Mark Levin, as president of the Landmark Foundation has a lawsuit already drafted and ready to file. I'm thinking this deem and pass talk is just a ruse to divert efforts to sway the votes of undecided Dems. I believe our best chance here is to have the Reform bill fail is a vote in the House. Many Dems are understandably very nervous about this coming November. A vote for Health Care is certain death in the next election. And if they are holding out for a bribe or deal - Sen. Coburn vows To block special deals for House members who switch their Obamacare vote from 'No' to to 'Yes'. "I want to send a couple of messages to my colleagues in the House. If you voted no and you vote yes, and you lose your election, and you think any nomination to a federal position isn’t going to be held in the Senate, I’ve got news for you. It’s going to be held. Number two is, if you get a deal, a parochial deal for you or your district, I’ve already instructed my staff and the staff of seven other senators that we will look..." The Dems are running out of time. They need to finish up Health care Reform so they can can get Immigration Reform and Universal Voter Registration finished by November. They've already exposed themselves as socialist dictators, which is why they are resorting to such desperate measures. If they fail at Health care Reform, their bid to turn America into a socialist third world country will be delayed indefinitely.
