Just traded my .40 for a .40

I had a very nice S&W 4046 (all stainless) that I thought was a well-built and good looking gun, but I could never get used to the trigger. I think it also sighted differently than I was used to with my Springfield XDMs (I have two 9mms, one with a 4.5" barrel and the other in the new 3.8" configuration). I always seemed to shoot it low. With some birthday money I had squirreled away, I paid $287.00 difference (tax included) for a brand spankin' new Springfield XDM-40 3.8! I thought that was a great deal. I can maybe can pick it up Monday if the guy happens to come in to his shop. I just really like the XDM line. They are comfy to me and shoot well for me.

I decided to get the regular XDM-40 with the 4.5" barrel instead of the 3.8. After discussing it with my brother, he confirmed what my gut was telling me. I think it will shoot better with the slightly longer barrel, and as far as concealability, it won't make much difference, as the grip is the thing that causes concealing issues, and the 3.8 and the 4.5 both have the same grip size. I picked it up today at the gun dealer and went and immediately put 200 rounds through it. I seemed to shoot low and left (mainly left), but after doing an internet search, I determined it is trigger technique and is a very common problem. I will say that with the XDM, the .40 was not uncomfortable at all to shoot and I was able to do quick strings of shots with fair accuracy. Just a really nice gun.

I too a big fan of the XD line of pistols.

All mine shoot very well, and very consistent for me. I've let others shoot and they also get low and left. I'm not saying this is your case, but in those cases where people have shot low and left with mine, it was due to recoil anticipation (all right handers). Snapcaps randomly placed in the mags will reveal anticipation, or possible trigger slap.

Also, if the trigger bothers you in the least, "Springer Precision" has a nice semi/drop in kit that you can tune the travel with a file (trigger bar has extra material on it). Its somewhat pricey but will take you from something you can certainly live with, to something you'll be bragging to everyone about (assuming you're the bragging type - if not, you'll be bragging to your self at the range). NOTE: if you detail strip the XD's make double sure you put that firing pin retainer back in - if you forget that roll pin in the top (just behind the chamber indicator) its full auto/open bolt city - could very well fire out of breach and wreck your day.

I have cleaned up my triggers with just a very light stone and polish. They are not the best triggers but better than many of the competitors I've tried. I say the XD has a decent combat trigger with a bit much to take up and reset, while the XDm is improved, its still a combat trigger to me. The irony of the XDm is that its supposed to be "match grade" - this is THE ONLY complaint I can find, and its something I honestly dont mind since I have done nothing to really correct it.

I love them all though. IMO you can not beat the XD's, any of them, especially within the price point they are sold at. And the ergo's on the XDm are more than strange looks, they really do work well - I can shoot them all day.

Enjoy your purchase!
