Judge says Shawano gun dealer should lose license But appeals process could take years

"The business opportunity afforded by a federal firearms license is a privilege, not a right," Griesbach wrote in his order. "With privilege comes a responsibility to adhere to (Gun Control Act) rules and regulations.

Owning a firearm is a right, but buying one, which requires that someone sell one, isn't? Kinda doesn't fit, does it?

Frankly, if the ATF is going to allege a business is making straw sales, I wish they would just gather the evidence and prosecute for the alleged straw sales. As it stands now the ATF can raid any gun store they feel like and "find" paperwork errors and then shut the business down either by court order or through the expense of having to fight the allegations. There should be another way, but at the same time, the government should be able to go after the guys who are actually selling guns to the people who shouldn't have them. Personally I think ATF should spend more time going after the straw purchasers, as those are the people who are actually knowingly breaking the law, than going after the legit businesses where the straw purchasers may have acquired some of their guns.

How about if LE spent what limited resources it has available to it on dealing with what is actually done with firearms that directly harms the well being of an individual or collection of individuals?

I cannot shake the idea that as a society we are spending way to much time, effort and resources trying to avoid things at the direct expense of dealing with what is actually happening. Liberty of the innocent is being eroded in the process and the only thing I can really see being augmented (certainly not safety) is power and control in the hands of an increasingly corrupt government.
