Illinois only state in region requiring a state-issued permit to buy firearms

By Greg Bishop | The Center Square 14 hrs ago

(The Center Square) – While Illinois residents continue to wait for their state-issued Firearm Owner Identification card, all neighboring states now have no such requirements for gun owners.

In Indiana, a permit is required to carry a gun, but no permit is required to purchase one and open carry is allowed. The same goes for Kentucky and Wisconsin. Missouri doesn’t require a purchase or a carry permit.

Iowa’s governor signed a measure Friday that allows residents to buy and carry firearms without a permit from the state. Gun rights groups applauded the move. Gun control groups opposed it.

“Today I signed legislation that protects the 2nd Amendment rights of Iowa’s law-abiding citizens while still preventing the sale of firearms to criminals and other dangerous individuals,” Gov. Kim Reynolds said Friday. “This law also takes greater steps to inform law enforcement about an individual’s mental illness helping ensure firearms don't end up in the wrong hands. We will never be able to outlaw or prevent every single bad actor from getting a gun, but what we can do is ensure law-abiding citizens have full access to their constitutional rights while keeping Iowans safe.”

Illinois state Rep. Tony McCombie, R-Savanna, is on the border and praised Iowa’s new law.

“It removes a level of government bureaucracy that is not needed, regulations, because of the federal background check,” McCombie said. “A federal background check is still going to be needed from a licensed dealer.”
...
“Look at Chicago, we have plenty of restrictions in Chicago and it didn’t stop, what, 34 shootings this weekend and seven more killed,” McCombie said. “Adding more laws certainly isn’t going to stop the crime.”

Well since no one else has mentioned it, we share a border with Michigan and they have a License to Purchase (LTP).

Can you show where that is on a map for the rest of us?

I've always thought I passed through a small spot of Indiana before touching Michigan.

If you go by road, yes. The IL-MI border lies entirely on Lake Michigan

I think you mean "in" Lake Michigan.

If you zoom in on the Great Lakes, you will see that that boundary line for Michigan covers much of Lakes Michigan, Superior, and Huron.

I guess that would depend on whether the boundary lies on the surface of the water or runs along the bottom. I've always assumed it was on the surface

How will this affect the reciprocity with my carry license when traveling?

If you dive to the bottom of the lake, you can see the line. Trust me.
