Anyone yet get a knock on the door by the police checking if your guns are properly stored?

Pritzker's new gun storage law is now in effect, but I wonder how it will be enforced. ISP raiding homes in the middle of the night? Or only going after someone who has legally used their gun at home in a self defense shooting who are then found to not own a proper storage container for when the gun is not being carried?

I did not hear of people randomly being stopped and searched for concealed firearms when the concealed carry act was passed. From the start of the FOID, no one has been randomly raiding homes to see if there are firearms without the owners having a FOID. I enhanced certain sections below.

(430 ILCS 64/1)
Sec. 1. Short title. This Act may be cited as the Safe Gun Storage Act.
(Source: P.A. 104-31, eff. 1-1-26.)

    (430 ILCS 64/5)
Sec. 5. Storage of firearms. A firearm owner shall not store or keep any firearm in any premises where the firearm owner knows or reasonably should know a minor without the lawful permission of the minor's parent, guardian, or person having charge of the minor, an at-risk person, or a prohibited person is likely to gain access to the firearm unless the firearm is secured in a locked container, properly engaged so as to render the firearm inaccessible or unusable to any person other than the owner or other lawfully authorized user. If the firearm is carried by or under the control of the owner or other lawfully authorized user, then the firearm is deemed lawfully stored or kept. This Section does not apply (i) if the minor, an at-risk person, or a prohibited person gains access to a firearm and uses it in a lawful act of self-defense or defense of another or (ii) to any firearm obtained by a minor, an at-risk person, or a prohibited person because of an unlawful entry of the premises by the minor, at-risk person, prohibited person or another person.

It looks like they might have a chance to prove how much they mean business this time:

New gun storage law took effect on same day boy found firearm, shot another child in Humboldt Park

...

But it is still not clear how the 8-year-old was so easily able to access a gun moments before he allegedly pulled the trigger.

The shooting happened as a new state law, the Safe Gun Storage Act, took effect on the same day.

This is the reason for the law. Before only a charge of child endangerment, or similar charge, could be made. I think that this has more teeth.

I am not thrilled with gun laws, but this is not as stupid as some of the others.

But it clearly hasn't created a deterrent effect.  So now we have a young man who might lose the use of his arm, and all the medical and other bills that will entail.  And the state would like to tack another $10k onto the family's financial ruin.

In my opinion, all it shows is that they're a bunch of heartless bastards.

And all of it in opposition to Heller and Bruin ...

Sorry if I'm drifting off-topic, but years ago they tried to pass a law where every bullet had to be engraved with a serial number.  I think GW Bush shot it down.  It sticks in my mind because I lost a liberal "friend" when I told him how idiotic the law would have been.  He quit speaking to me over it.😭 😉

That was introduced in Illinois and some other states at various times.  We, IllinoisCarry, killed that thing DRT.

A political wannabe who tried to push this, including running for offices in aurora IL, has the "it's got to expired by now" patent on it.  There were a couple of very good reasons why it never moved off of proposed legislation in several states.  GW was not a factor in Illinois, AFAIK.

Freshman IL state Rep Sonya Harper has been flogging this thing every session since 2016.

Matt Harrington is/was the CEO of Ammo Coding Systems, candidate for aurora alderman.  He might have flogged his "invention" on social media, perhaps even forums like this one.

No.  Suspect it will only come up if there's "an incident", or if they want to pile on charges.

(Yes, I do need to get an additional gun locker.)

Sheriff has more important things to do around here than play silly games out of Chicago. Same as with the "assault weapons" crap. Now I am not saying it might get tacked on when you get arrested  for other stuff. Not worried.

How would you know? Anyone with half a brain wouldn't open the door to talk to them. They'd just hear you on your ring camera saying you need to leave the premises same as the jehova's witnesses or siding salesmen.

It's beyond stupid. You really think that a 2-time felon is going to say, "Oh sh*t, I need to get a lock box so they won't charge me with this storage law crime." Even though he is in possession of a Glock w/a switch and a 33rd magazine. Added charge by CC Prosecutors, dropped during plea deal.

This law is to get FOID Card Holders. That's it. Death by a 1,000 cuts...

So, what's the backstory on this yahoo article. It says no one had been charged, SHOCKING...

They don't care, do ya'll not get this?, they want you, not the bad guys. Once the good guys no longer have them, it will get really crazy. They use the bad guys to limit the good guys, once they achieve that goal, it will be full on all guns are gone.

I'd happily consider myself an outlaw in a situation like that.

I have been shushed for years for saying it but it's coming true bit by bit - We are being disarmed, inch by inch, bit by bit, by this "micromanaging" of legal gun owners. And SCOTUS is not coming to save US. Neither is Trump nor the Republicans. Get ready to be a criminal, Friends, because the legislation won't stop until we have to choose between being law abiding and staying armed.

My guess...

It will be enforced like PICA. No one gets bothered at all.

Yet... the law lays in wait, like an evil predator in the dark, to wreck the life of a good citizen who would dare to exercise his rights.

Oh well, move along, nothing to be concerned about.

Posted

Yup. Just because "they" have not yet enforced PICA does not mean that, evetually, they won't suddenly start enforcement. I didn't worry too much about PICA and such as I went along with the crowd that feels positive and that it would be struck down by SCOTUS but it doesn't look like that will happen any time soon.

I'm concerned at this point that the backlash against Trump's heavy handedness will lead to a National Democrat Super Majority and this nonsense will go Federal. And we/US doesn't need that.

Has anyone been caught up by the inheritance requirements?  Enforcing PICA in a massive gun-grabbing exercise wouldn't end well for someone, but if they can get them one or two at a time by interfering with a probate case then they'll call it a win.

I imagine most Illinoisans pass them on quietly, without involvement from ISP or FFLs.

Kind of like PICA compliance in Illinois.

Tim

Accurate. And one day one of these adult kids will speed somewhere in IL and get pulled over. That kid will get charged with a felony and spend thousands of dollars to try and not have his life ruined with a felony on his record. That will also happen quietly, no media needed.

The charges will be pleaded down down a misdemeanor, the state gets to destroy the guns (or they end up in somebody else's private collection), the defendant gets a slap on the wrist, the lawyers get their money.  It's a win for everyone!

Only if you're a felon who already have their rights prohibited. If you're a 2A guy, well, good luck...
