vito Posted January 3, 2026 at 04:06 PM Posted January 3, 2026 at 04:06 PM Pritzker's new gun storage law is now in effect, but I wonder how it will be enforced. ISP raiding homes in the middle of the night? Or only going after someone who has legally used their gun at home in a self defense shooting who are then found to not own a proper storage container for when the gun is not being carried?

I did not hear of people randomly being stopped and searched for concealed firearms when the concealed carry act was passed. From the start of the FOID, no one has been randomly raiding homes to see if there are firearms without the owners having a FOID. I enhanced certain sections below. (430 ILCS 64/1) Sec. 1. Short title. This Act may be cited as the Safe Gun Storage Act. (Source: P.A. 104-31, eff. 1-1-26.) (430 ILCS 64/5) Sec. 5. Storage of firearms. A firearm owner shall not store or keep any firearm in any premises where the firearm owner knows or reasonably should know a minor without the lawful permission of the minor's parent, guardian, or person having charge of the minor, an at-risk person, or a prohibited person is likely to gain access to the firearm unless the firearm is secured in a locked container, properly engaged so as to render the firearm inaccessible or unusable to any person other than the owner or other lawfully authorized user. If the firearm is carried by or under the control of the owner or other lawfully authorized user, then the firearm is deemed lawfully stored or kept. This Section does not apply (i) if the minor, an at-risk person, or a prohibited person gains access to a firearm and uses it in a lawful act of self-defense or defense of another or (ii) to any firearm obtained by a minor, an at-risk person, or a prohibited person because of an unlawful entry of the premises by the minor, at-risk person, prohibited person or another person. soundguy Posted January 3, 2026 at 06:02 PM Posted January 3, 2026 at 06:02 PM My guess... It will be enforced like PICA. No one gets bothered at all. Cheers, Tim
mauserme Posted January 3, 2026 at 06:46 PM Posted January 3, 2026 at 06:46 PM It looks like they might have a chance to prove how much they mean business this time: https://www.yahoo.com/news/articles/gun-storage-law-took-effect-171723282.html New gun storage law took effect on same day boy found firearm, shot another child in Humboldt Park ... But it is still not clear how the 8-year-old was so easily able to access a gun moments before he allegedly pulled the trigger. The shooting happened as a new state law, the Safe Gun Storage Act, took effect on the same day. ...

Before only a charge of child endangerment, or similar charge, could be made. I think that this has more teeth. I am not thrilled with gun laws, but this is not as stupid as some of the others.
mauserme Posted January 3, 2026 at 07:56 PM Posted January 3, 2026 at 07:56 PM But it clearly hasn't created a deterrent effect. So now we have a young man who might lose the use of his arm, and all the medical and other bills that will entail. And the state would like to tack another $10k onto the family's financial ruin. In my opinion, all it shows is that they're a bunch of heartless bastards. And all of it in opposition to Heller and Bruin ...

Sorry if I'm drifting off-topic, but years ago they tried to pass a law where every bullet had to be engraved with a serial number. I think GW Bush shot it down. It sticks in my mind because I lost a liberal "friend" when I told him how idiotic the law would have been. He quit speaking to me over it.😭 😉

RandyP Posted January 5, 2026 at 08:44 PM Posted January 5, 2026 at 08:44 PM Laws or not, enforced or not, if I am a gun owner and there are kids living in or visiting my home, IMHO I would be brain dead NOT to lock up said guns out of their reach.

A political wannabe who tried to push this, including running for offices in aurora IL, has the "it's got to expired by now" patent on it. There were a couple of very good reasons why it never moved off of proposed legislation in several states. GW was not a factor in Illinois, AFAIK. Freshman IL state Rep Sonya Harper has been flogging this thing every session since 2016. Matt Harrington is/was the CEO of Ammo Coding Systems, candidate for aurora alderman. He might have flogged his "invention" on social media, perhaps even forums like this one.
