US Justice Department plans gun rights office within civil rights unit

WASHINGTON, Nov 25 (Reuters) - The Justice Department plans to expand gun-rights protections with a new office in its civil rights division dedicated to enforcing the U.S. constitutional right to bear arms, according to plans shared with Congress and reviewed by Reuters.

The office, called the Second Amendment Rights Section, expects to open on December 4 and will be dedicated to investigating local laws or policies limiting gun rights.

The section intends to execute the broad policy directions from a February executive order, opens new tab issued by President Donald Trump directing Attorney General Pam Bondi to comb the entire U.S. government to "assess any ongoing infringements" of gun rights.
...

The DOJ did not immediately comment.

Just saved Blonde a lot of time searching around looking for infringements. Should we all start holding our breaths now?

I worry they will botch it and set us back further somehow.

While admitting that President Trump is as imperfect as the rest of us, it's interesting that our biggest worry right now is that in the areas he's trying to help our 2A rights, he might not achieve perfection.

It wasn't very long ago that our biggest worries were what President Biden, and a potential President Harris, would do to further infringe our rights.

Given a choice, I'll take whatever help the current administration is trying to offer, even if it isn't everything we want.  It's way better than those others who constantly work against us on everything.

In my opinion the DOJ is focusing on laws, like PICA and the Hawaii "vampire" law, that have a good chance of success at SCOTUS.  I don't know if they would be involved on other cases following those, but it makes sense to me that they would want to give SCOTUS relatively easy next steps following NYSRPA v Bruen, while not scaring off the likes of Justice Roberts who would not like the thought of advancing 2A cases too far, too fast.   Depending on those rulings, they can push for more later if that's the direction they're taking this.

Given that a "rights restoration division" was included as a department within the ATF when it was created with the passage of GCA '68, one could argue this is an unneeded step, or rather, is being conducted for publicity.

Sadly, RRD has been unfunded, and thus unstaffed, for the entirety of it's existence, (Congress going so far as to codify the defunding in 1992), regardless of which party holds the majority in Congress.

Mark has a "geeky" follow up to this subject. The tact  is to defend it in a similar way to the Obama admin did with the defense of marriage act.

I saw that yesterday. I haven't had a chance to watch the entire video but here it is for anyone else...

THE SECRET REASON WHY PAM BONDI IS FIGHTING FOR THE NFA (OR NOT)!
