Once inside, officers were confronted by another person who was armed with a rifle, and an officer opened fire.

Police now say the officer was the only person who fired a weapon, and that the "gunfire unintentionally struck Officer Rivera."

I suspect that the officer who fired freaked out when he saw the rifle and got tunnel vision.

How do you know that they do not have tactical training?

Very little information has been released. No body-cam video has been released. These are a few of the questions to be considered. I am sure the professional investigators will have many more. Did the shooter violate his training? Maybe Officer Rivera moved to the side at the last second? How long do you wait to shoot, if a suspect is displaying a weapon?

The bottom line is it was a huge failure and they need to go back and look at all aspects.

I hate to say this, but you can have all the training/experience you can have and yet, sh-t happens and folks can die! We won't know what really happen here, but bottom line is a young police officer has died in the line of duty! Prayers for the police officer who pulled the trigger, they will have to live with this for the rest of their lives.

This is a good time to judge slowly. Based on the early facts, they ran into an ambush. Depending on their background, their training may not be that far from your own.

I'm not judging, I say look at everything like the NTSB after a plane crash. You need to find out how it went wrong to fix it.

 

As to women shouldn't be cops I don't get that from this. I do know many cops who feel this way though. It's a matter of strength to them as in being able to lift a larger person and also hands on situations. It's why no Delta, Seal operators are female, they are certainly smart enough and their pain tolerance is known to be above the males, it's a simple matter of strength. 

 

I know Delta G has women, but they aren't door kickers.

Being of an older generation I do not believe the mothers of our children should be intentionally placed in harm's way. Only the men should bare this burden taking the risks.

+1, this is it exactly. We should be valuing our women enough to keep them from these experiences. Even if they think they want to do it, they should be protected from these exposures to maintain their empathy and nurturing value. Not to mention the potential depradations that are often wrought upon women when captured in time of battle. I know police work isn't quite the same as military work (yet) but some things should be left to the menfolk. Not because they're not able (although most aren't up to the task physically) or willing, but they're too valuable to society as women.

Just as we've forgotten what it is to be a man, we've lied and pretended about what it is to be a woman.
