Call to Action!
Witness Slips Needed!

This week's Call to Action focuses again on HB18 FOID Denial & Revok – Stalking, a bill that, if made law, will deny some folks their Second Amendment rights for things that aren't illegal in Illinois. In committee, the sponsor spoke of an amendment that would fix the many problems with this bill. As promised, an amendment has been filed, though it fails to live up to the promise to fix everything. House Amendment 1 proposes to deny rights based on things that are “substantially similar” to illegal acts in Illinois rather than being similar in a more general sense. But “similar” does not equal “identical”, and it would still be possible to deny a person his or her rights for acts that are not illegal here. We ask your continued opposition to this attempt to expand the ever growing list of disqualified persons.

Another bill, new to our alerts, is HB1177 Use/Occ Tax – Firearms proposing to impose a 3.75% surcharge on the sale of firearms and firearm components. Because this bill has been sitting in a subcommittee since 2/25, we are unsure if it will be heard anytime soon. Still, as they say, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, and we ask you to show your opposition to the bill as the cure to this flagrant potential infringement of our rights. It is posted to both the 3/11 and 3/13 Revenue & Finance hearings.

The final bill of concern this week is a perfect example of the convoluted logic of gun control. HB2965 Crim Cd – Lost Firearms seeks to impose fines as high as $1,000 if a gun owner's lost or stolen firearm is found. The bill also provides for revocation of the owner's FOID card and concealed carry license. While normal folks consider the return of stolen property a winning situation, the sponsor appears to prefer that the missing gun remain lost or stolen. We oppose this nonsensical legislation for obvious reasons, and ask you to file witness slips against it.

As always, the Illinois Carry Forum is the best place to find conversation relating to our Second Amendment rights. Swing by and set a spell.

Done for all of them. I have one 'uniformed' question - is there any evidence that filing these Opponent slips has ever actually accomplished anything beyond personal satisfaction?

10 years ago I believe it did.

Now they just ignore them.

Thanks for doing those.  I know it can get discouraging, but when I see bills like HB52 GIS - LIS - Witness Slip Tracking filed, it tells me that witness slips mean more to the legislature than is always obvious.  And when I see  Kathleen Sances of GPAC slipping in, like she did on HB18, or Mike Zalewski ( a former anti-gun House member) slipping in on behalf of the State's Attorneys like he did on HB34, it tells me they understand the importance of witness slips.

The way I look at it, the least witness slips can do is prevent the sponsor from saying "I know of no opposition" during floor debate.  I personally believe they do a lot ore than that.
