Call to Action!
Witness Slips Needed!

In this week's alert we revisit HB34 Elec Cd – Firearms Polling Place. Included in past Calls to Action with the mention that House Committee Amendment 1 would likely be the subject of a future alert, the amendment has now been posted to the March 4, House Judiciary – Criminal hearing.

In it's original form, this bill proposed to ban firearms in polling places. We believe this to be duplicative of existing law and, therefore, completely unnecessary.

The amendment, however, is more insidious. It would ban licensed carry at “Any building, real property, or parking area of a polling place...”. By removing the end point of a licensee's journey, the parking lot, the possibility of legal carry is effectively removed for the entire journey. What good would it do to drive to the polling place to vote, only to be barred from parking there when you arrive? It becomes an untenable choice between two rights – the right to carry on one hand, and the right to vote on the other. You may not exercise both.

And, once the “safe harbor” parking lot exemption is removed from one prohibited area it will be only a matter of time before all parking lots, all end points, are prohibited, effectively banning carry everywhere.

Please join us in opposing not only the initial bill once again but, now, HCA1 as well.
