A garbage collector shot two armed robbers, killing one, outside a Chicago elementary school on Friday morning. Police said the victim, 28, is licensed to carry a concealed firearm.

He was collecting trash in an alleyway next to DRW College Prep, 931 South Homan, when two men walked up, displayed a gun, and announced the robbery, according to police. An "exchange of gunfire" ensued between the robbers and the garbage collector, CPD said in a media statement.

While the victim was not injured, the two robbers were not so fortunate. One of them, a 42-year-old man, collapsed about 20 feet from the school's front entrance. He was pronounced dead at the scene from a gunshot wound to the head.

Police and court records show he has a lengthy criminal history, including a conviction for a 2008 armed robbery that occurred in the 1300 block of South Homan, four blocks directly south from where he died.

The other robber, 20, was taken to Mt. Sinai in critical condition with a gunshot wound to his neck.

EMS also took the garbage collector to St. Anthony Hospital for an evaluation, but he was in good condition, police said.

Investigators found two handguns and seven shell casings at the scene.

SCC picked this one up, too.

We also need someone to keep an eye on the garbage company in case they try to fire this employee for defending himself - if they aren't sending armed guards out on the streets before the sun is up, then retaliating against an employee protecting himself should be highly discouraged.

Has there ever been a study as to the Tax Payer dollars Saved when a violent criminal is killed in the commission of a violent crime as compared to medically treating, using taxpayer money to publicly defend/ prosecute, and ultimately incarcerate / house / support said criminal??

Gonna bet Taxpayers win when the bad guys lose !!

No food, no "facilities", no guards, etc., just a simple cremation and mass burial of multiple remains.  Sounds "cost effective" to me. :thumbsup3:

That scene should be in the next JW. Killed one dude, struggled with another, flipped him over and shot him too. Darted from the scene afterwards. One (I guess 2) for the good guys...

A man from Hammond, Indiana, has been charged with trying to rob a concealed carry holder working as a garbage collector outside a Chicago elementary school Friday morning.

Aaron White, 23, remained hospitalized from a gunshot wound he received when the victim pulled out a firearm and began shooting during the hold-up at DRW College Prep, 931 South Homan, around 5:18 a.m. Officials said the garbage collector killed White's alleged accomplice, 42-year-old Kenneth Elliott.
...
The larger robber, Elliott, confronted the victim while the second offender, allegedly White, walked up with a gun. The victim appeared to push the robber's gun away with his forearm while struggling with the Elliott. As the gunman extended his weapon again, the victim fired at least three shots, striking the armed robber, who fell to the ground.

Seemingly unfazed, Elliott fought the victim even more aggressively, wrapping his arms around the man, who fired more shots until Elliott collapsed.
...
White is charged with attempted armed robbery. Prosecutors will seek to have him detained after he is released from the hospital.
