russ60477 Posted September 20, 2023 at 05:20 PM Share Posted September 20, 2023 at 05:20 PM I'm looking for a home defense unit since the devil guns are no longer allowed. I was looking at a rossi lever 357/38 or maybe a ruger bolt gun whats your thoughts I'm not a shotgun gun.

Even with 357 rounds, they shoot very lightly. With 38 or even 38 +P rounds, you won't even feel it. Does Rossi have any with the ability to add optics and a light? You might want to go that way, like the Henry X models, or Ruger/Marlin version of same.

Tip Posted September 20, 2023 at 07:30 PM Share Posted September 20, 2023 at 07:30 PM If you are looking for self defense or house defense then a lever action .410 is another possibility with a variety of options — rifled slugs, Hornady Critical Defense rounds, buckshot, rubber buckshot or shot shells. If you want a smaller package then there’s the Henry Axe or Mossberg Shockwave both of which are light recoil short weapons well suited for house defense. Opening up the throat while using low dram loads may fall in your acceptable felt recoil parameters. I advise women to back up against a wall placing to butt against the wall. Smallbore Posted September 22, 2023 at 12:59 AM Share Posted September 22, 2023 at 12:59 AM Are there any terrible guns? With cnc machining quality is good. Semi autos of high quality malfunction. Lever action regardless of name should be dependable. The two things I look for are fit and finish with a crisp/slick trigger. If the ffl will not let you squeeze the trigger you are buying a pig in a poke.
ragsbo Posted September 22, 2023 at 03:39 AM Share Posted September 22, 2023 at 03:39 AM Lever actions have been getting the job done for over a century! My stupid law fall back is a 30/30! But I would also suggest you look at revolvers for home defense, would be easier to handle in close confines, you can get a decent size one that with good ammo would not have that much recoil. You could even get a revolver /carbine combo in the same caliber to share ammo= I understand that is what they did back in the day.

Each shell in this box of 25 fires 9 pellets of 00 buckshot at a muzzle velocity of 1,200 feet per second. This produces excellent stopping power at typical self-defense ranges. The reduced powder charge and recoil reduces the risk of over-penetration and makes your shotgun more controllable--an important factor if you need to fire more than once to stop an assailant. 00 buckshot is a powerful, versatile shot type that has been proven in many self-defense and hunting situations. DoYouFeelLucky Posted September 24, 2023 at 12:19 AM Share Posted September 24, 2023 at 12:19 AM I had a Rossi lever gun in .44 mag. It was OK, however the mechanism was a little unpolished and rough. It got the job done, however at one point the front stock broke and I had to glue it back together. If anyone makes buckshot in .28 gauge, that could be a lite recoiling yet packing enough punch for in-the-home defense, option.
ryr8828 Posted September 24, 2023 at 04:13 PM Share Posted September 24, 2023 at 04:13 PM Not sure why a glock 19 wouldn't be good enough, self defense usually isn't applicable at 50 yards.
jpearson Posted September 24, 2023 at 04:35 PM Share Posted September 24, 2023 at 04:35 PM Lever guns in pistol calibers are typically a better choice indoors at short range than most shotguns Lever gun Lower recoil Better accuracy Higher capacity Shorter (16 in barrel) Lighter Handier Manual of arms with lever gun takes more practice and .. You lose raw power from the shotgun but make it up in other ways . Lever guns are over looked as defensive weapons . Winchester or Marlin are the best choices ... possibly Henry (no personal experience with Henry) I am not sure about Rossi quality. My current defensive carbine Winchester 94 30-30 Williams peep sights. Sighted in at 100yds Sling. It is quick , lighter than and är and more powerful than a varmit cartridge. Just another opinion .... I am not biased against shotguns I also have at the ready a 12 ga pump set up for defensive use
Smallbore Posted September 25, 2023 at 02:02 AM Share Posted September 25, 2023 at 02:02 AM I bet we can all agree that regardless of the chosen gun, the best choice is practice, practice and more practice.
