Think about it.

That's probably the plan. Liberal Democrats and murder enablers like the so called "Moms" are after law abiding gun owners NOT criminals and when the so called "protect Illinois communities act " does nothing to reduce the violence they'll start spewing more garbage about more registration and more bans on the rest of the guns. Of course they'll do nothing to push for longer prison sentences against the criminals and gangs because those are the scumbags that provide the dead bodies they use as props to come after the law abiding.

True, but rest assured that if some scumbag tries to murder you and you refuse to equitably allow him to do so and use a legal firearm to defend yourself, you will be locked up for life.  Racist!

I expect nothing less. The courts may, but probably will not, permanently put an end to this. Nobody knows for sure, and probably many will not do what the state asks anyway. So technically the state will have created a major crime wave. Doing exactly what they set out to prevent.

All the states around us will still be blamed for providing fuel for the lawless situation in this state and they will decide to go after the rest of the items owned in Illinois, because that is all they can do. The FOID card will play a huge roll in creating a statewide registry of all Items.

How can a cook county resident register an evil black rifle without incriminating themselves due to the existing cook county ban?

I think it depends upon your city/town/village first, THEN county. This isn’t legal advice and I am not an attorney, and you didn’t pay me,  nor did I sleep in a holiday in express recently either.

What if ALL of my firearms were legally purchased a few weeks ago during "freedom week"?

According to the ISP, weapons purchased in that week are not allowed to be registered , yet are not legal to own by the registration date.

Not registering my firearms will make me a felon.

Registering them will either be impossible, or will go against my right not to self-incriminate myself.

Whatever shall I do?

The judge did ask to be notified of any such shenanigans by the state. Wouldn't it be beautiful if somebody got held in contempt? That is if the law isn't permanently enjoined by then.

Michigan already has handgun registration but I don't know if its ever been legally challenged. I also highly doubt that there is any founding era examples of registration they could lean on post Bruen.

If we don't have any ruling by end of year I guess you guys are just gonna have to get extra creative on your storage solutions (think Anne Frank).......Personally I already sold mine a few years ago to a FFL dealer at a gunshow over in Indiana. I can't remember which one and I am not required to keep track if it goes to an FFL so sorry I can't be of more help officer.

No.

Look at Australia.

Aussie registration campaign was almost a complete success.

Purchase stats vs. the registration statistics...   The number of unregistered firearms is of course unknown but is very likely to be quite small.

Edit: but of course the situation here is not as easy for the authorities; guns and (maybe) owners will migrate to states with different laws, if any remain.

I hope you are just being sarcastic. The Australian “buy back” was pegged at 19% compliance by the governments own analysis. New Zealand around 10%.

Looking around the internet, Aardvark seems to be correct.

When I think about the possibility of creating a registry for all firearms in Illinois, or even nationwide, I imagine many folks will be too busy doing something else to ever get around to registering their inheritance/gift guns, or those they bought from a private seller before the ISP registry happened. If there is a fee involved... forget about it. Maybe all new post registration purchases will be registered automatically.

Compliance with the NZ buyback seems to have been incredibly low... and they were getting cash and were already onboard with free healthcare, pensions and all those other benefits common to socialism.

Cheers,

Tim

Please read before jumping to reply.

I said *registration*.

Edit: the owner compliance numbers I've seen vary between 80 and 90%.

There are a lot of people in Australia who legally own registered firearms.

Think about this... Completely off the book original purchases are of course off the radar, but first owner sales stats vs registration rates will give you most of the info, including that on guns that were legal but are no longer legal to own.

Didn't Chicago end it's decades old registry for lack of participation?

If I remember correctly, the registration was for handguns grandfathered as possessed prior to King Richard II's draconian ban; you had to register them annually.  I think the registry was moot when the ban was found unconstitutional?

Doing some quick reading to supplement my memory…

in 1968 Chicago required all firearms to be registered. Mayor Byrne prohibited the annual registration of new handguns around 1982, and if you missed your renewal date, your handgun was now unregisterable. Aldermen “Blagojovich’s Father in Law” missed his registration renewal date one year and relocated his items to Wisconsin. He later sponsored a registration amnesty. Registration was discontinued in 2013.

I’m guessing compliance was low from the beginning to the end. I once owned a Garand which had been registered in the city in 1976 by the previous owner. I probably still have his registration papers laying around somewhere.

Cheers,

Tim
