CCL & FOID Renewal

This is correct. You only need to renew your ccl and isp will renew your foid card automatically.

Isn't there a little more to it. Having the expiration dates already coinciding makes it easier to understand. The ccl is renewed every five years, the foid every ten years. If finger prints have been submitted with either foid or ccl application then foid becomes a paid up life time item. Then all we have is a ccl renewal $150.00 fee every five years.. Without finger prints there would be that $10.00 foid fee added to the ccl $150.00 plus service charge every ten years. I hope without finger prints it is a combined charge on one page but we are dealing with the government. If foid expiration date (without finger prints) is ln the future past ones current upcoming ccl expiration then the current foid ten year expiration will be extended out to the next future ccl expiration. I think. Otherwise we are cheated out of a full ten years for a current foid card.

If you have only a FOID and submit fingerprints, you get the automatic renewal.

(b-5) By January 1, 2023, the Illinois State Police shall by rule provide a process for the automatic renewal of the Firearm Owner's Identification Card of a person at the time of an inquiry in subsection (b). Persons eligible for this process must have a set of fingerprints on file with their applications under either subsection (a-25) of Section 4 or the Firearm Concealed Carry Act.

If you have a CCL, FOID remains valid.

(c) Beginning January 1, 2022, if the Firearm Owner's Identification Card of a licensee under the Firearm Concealed Carry Act expires during the term of the licensee's concealed carry license, the Firearm Owner's Identification Card and the license remain valid during the validity of the concealed carry license and the licensee does not have to renew his or her Firearm Owner's Identification Card, if the Firearm Owner's Identification Card has not been otherwise renewed as provided in this Act.

You submitted the law while I was editing errors. I am slow finger puncher. I hope my interpretation is correct. If not please correct or delete my post.

No expiration dates printed on the card. I have been telling my students to put medical tape on the back of the new card and write your expiration dates on the tape.

Don't forget that you can also log in to your dashboard on the ISP website and digitally generate your E card version.

In either case, there is no $10 renewal fee for the FOID card.  At least that is what renewing cardholders are telling me and what I see when helping people renew.

When I applied for renewal on 6/9 the renewal button was active on both the FOID and CCL so I applied and paid both the $10.00 for the FOID and the $150.00 plus fees for the CCL.

My cc was charged.

I can confirm at least 4 students, renew ccl, one going back to Feb, and just got the new card. The FOID now has an expiration of 10 years from the CCL issue date. FOID was set to expire in 2027 and is now expiring in 2033, so I can confirm the auto renewal.

PS I have sent an email to ask if they had prints, or not. I'll chime in when I get that info back.

Can you confirm that the new card does or does not have any date on it?

I checked the portal, my FOID was renewed to 6/2033.

CCL is still “under review”.

No expiration date, the date is only visible from the ISP dashboard. I tell students, to put some masking tape on the back and write down the dates there for easy checking.

Also, they said they did not have to pay for the FOID when they renewed the CCL, it was free. They did not submit fingerprints either for the original, or for this renewal.

I guess I made the mistake of renewing my FOID separately, o well it's an honor to donate $11.00 to our wonderful state.

More to the story, after I applied for renewal of the FOID & CCL the portal shows my FOID expires June 14, 2033 CCL is under review.

Today June 20, 2023 I get a letter from the ISP stating, ISP records indicate that your current FOID card is scheduled to expire on 6/14/2033 (YES 2033). To avoid any interruption in the Validity of the FOID card, you are encouraged to submit renewal....yadda yadda...

any thoughts on this?

Perhaps the only thing worse than bureaucratic incompetence is automated incompetence. Ignore it.

The procedures are all relatively new so we don't really know.  We would greatly appreciate getting updates about her status - the information could be very helpful.

I sent the following question and the ISP Responded

My wife completed her CCL renewal application three days ago. Per her dashboard, her FOID card shows a Renewal button. I am under the impression that renewing the CCL will automatically renew the FOID as well.

Am I correct or will my wife also have to complete the application to renew her FOID?

ISP RESPONSE

Good morning,

The way it works, when your CCL goes active, your FOID will automatically renew for another ten years. If her FOID should expire before her CCL goes active, it will not automatically renew. She should check the expiration date on her FOID and the remaining processing days on her CCL to see if she should renew her FOID or not.
