Let's Do This Again

In our last Call to Action, we asked for your help opposing four bills and supporting two. As sometimes happens, especially when dealing with the state, things didn't go as planned. One of their servers was reportedly malfunctioning and, being a state holiday weekend, the ability to reliably file witness slips was not restored until hours before the scheduled hearing. Then, as if this was not confusing enough the hearing was canceled, ending our ability to file slips at all.

We, of course, will not be deterred. Our determination to protect and promote our Second Amendment rights continues stronger than ever, bolstered by the Supreme Court ruling in NYSRPA v Bruen – the ruling that hangs like the sword of Damocles over the efforts of those who oppose the Constitution.

In addition to that earlier legislation, today we ask for your help on three more bills recently assigned to committees.

HB2220 Innkeeper Protection allows hotels to refuse service to guests for a variety of reasons while claiming to prohibit discrimination. That claim, however, applies only to their preferred rights. The bill specifically allows discrimination against those wishing to exercise their enumerated right to keep and bear arms by allowing a hotel to eject patrons who deigned to bring a firearm while traveling. The anti-gun legislators who support this would be “up in arms” if our firearms were stolen from vehicles parked in public garages, yet that's exactly the result they'll achieve if this bill becomes law.

HB2806 Use/Occ Tax – Ammunition would impose a 1% surcharge on ammunition sales. Forget Supreme Court analogies comparing the Second Amendment to other rights. Forget the fact that rights cannot be taxed. They want what they want, even if it means ignoring the foundational law of the land.

Another addition, HB2124 GA - LIS - Witness Slip Tracking, is a bill we support. It also has the support of 32 house members who hope to limit the games played all too often in the legislature, games that prevent public input by moving legislative language to a shell bill with little opportunity for debate. While not being a total solution to that problem, it does allow witness slips filed on one bill to follow the legislation if it's moved to another bill. And, while some folks question whether witness slips really make a difference, this bill demonstrates the value many legislators place on those slips both as a tool during debate and as part of the permanent legislative record. Join us in supporting this protection of our right to participate in the legislative process.
