Mods:

Has anyone compiled a map of the Illinois County Sheriffs statements rejecting HB5471?  I thought I ran across one early in the situation, but now cannot find it.  If someone has done this, can someone repost and keep it updated?  Hopefully I’m not stepping on anyone’s toes.  If so, please delete this.  Many thanks.

County Sheriffs are elected so I do not think the Governor can "fire" them. I might be wrong but I don't think so. This is exactly what I have been afraid of over the years - the State Government goes mental and the chief law enforcement officers refuse to comply with unconstitutional "laws" and the result is a total mess. This is gonna be a mess for Illinois.

The Governor has no authority to fire or get rid of the Sheriffs. And yes, we can thank these gun grabbing sociopaths for the mess we are in

Lake County sheriff released a statement supporting the law on their Facebook as expected. The comments are brutal and much deserved.  I would say 90% against him. Go check out their page before they delete all the comments.

As I said in other threads.  The Moms that Demand Action but never get any got him in.  Curran had the lead, but over the course of several days the harvested mail-in ballots kept coming in and his lead slowly evaporated. Idleburg will do whatever the North Shore Karens want.

I cannot see the comments but one must ask why his department has those “killing machines” or “weapons of war”.  Who do they plan to kill if that is all they can be used for.  Who are the LC sheriffs officers going to war with?

He plans on making his Moms Demand Action base happy by using those “killing machines” on those pesky gun owners and their pets

"Weapons of War."  Any country going to war with commercial AR15's is going to lose.  Badly.  Their infantry would die in droves.  Weapons of (early) WWII.  What an azshat!

Unless I misunderstood your post, that's just another sheriff who is trying to walk the fence just like Tazwell Co. Sheriff.  No where did he say he would not enforce an unconstitutional law.

Sheriff Mendrick catching some flack

https://www.dailyherald.com/news/20230117/retract-or-resign-county-board-members-assail-dupage-sheriff-over-weapons-ban-remarks

DuPage County residents and several county board members are calling on Sheriff James Mendrick to either retract his statement about not enforcing the state's ban on some firearms or step down.

Mendrick was not available for comment Tuesday morning and did not attend the DuPage County Board's judicial and public safety committee meeting where his stance drew sharp criticism from residents and board members.

"Bottom line: Mendrick was elected to enforce the law and not interpret it," Elmhurst resident Amy Lippert said in an email read at Tuesday's committee meeting. "If he won't uphold his oath and enforce the law, he should resign or be recalled. If he wants to interpret laws, he can try to become a judge."

Mendrick issued a statement Friday saying he believes House Bill 5471, which the governor signed into law Wednesday, is unconstitutional. The law, in part, bans the sale, purchase and manufacture of certain high-powered weapons and high- capacity magazines. It also requires those who already own such weapons to register them with the Illinois State Police.

It's pretty sad when people have no idea that the US Constitution is the supreme law of the land, and that when a state statute clearly violates not only the 2nd Amendment but the most recent Supreme Court decision regarding it, that no interpretation is necessary. The sheriff is simply upholding his oath as he should. The above resident needs to repeat 5th grade civics, and stop bothering the rest of us with her impaired cognition.
