Better question as an elected official, does she not understand that Constitutionally protected rights are not on the cutting block to be denied because it might be unpopular or inconvenient to allow them to be exercised?

I don't think she understands much about anything. JB must be getting worried because he has his minions firing back at the Sheriffs. That's a stupid move. If he was at all confident that the law was going to stand up in the courts then he would ignore the Sheriffs and bask in the glow of his own moral superiority. This is great. The law enforcement community has told the lawmakers that they are wrong and the petty little legislators have their panties in a bunch. They can pass whatever laws they want but they don't have the guts to enforce the law themselves.  Thank God the Sheriffs stepped up. JB is running scared and he is seeing his presidential aspirations go up in smoke from this bonfire of bogus bull****. He should resign. That would do more to protect Illinois communities than any law they pass in Springfield.

Don't bet on it, his voter base still backs him and backs taking away all guns, even when he crashes and burns in the courts he will spin it to his voters as the GOPs fault and they will swallow that up hook, line and sinker.

I don't disagree with you that his base will back him but his presidential bid will depend on his ability to handle problems, and so far, he is showing that he is a weak, petty tyrant who needs women to fight his battles. Not a good look

Maura (who’s leading the charge on Kane Co) doesn’t understand much of anything. She is a complete idiot regarding gun laws. Proof? Here. This is from when she became the main sponsor of “Fix the FOID”. She didn’t even know how firearm transfers were done, yet she somehow wanted to change the law regarding it? She’s an idiot

Yep. Just parroting information someone else is feeding them.  If they cared to learn they would search for the true information on this issue.

I agree, but in his heart he knows he is just a spoiled brat that can't convince people to follow him because, when it comes down to it, people don't respect him. I think that frosts his cookies more than he lets on.

Statists gotta State.  The sheriff is a separate, elected public official designated as such in the Illinois constitution. Same for states attorneys.

"Committee members echoed calls for Mendrick to retract his statement, with some suggesting the board should censure the sheriff if he does not. It was unclear Tuesday if the board has the authority to censure a sheriff. Committee members asked a representative from the DuPage County state's attorney's office to research the matter.

"If he can't enforce the laws of the state then he needs to really consider stepping aside," said Chaplin, a Democrat from Downers Grove. "We need somebody in that office that's responsible and that will uphold the laws of this state."

Others, however, showed support for Mendrick and said it was unrealistic to expect that the sheriff's office could enforce registration of weapons.

"He does not have the resources to put a task force or deputy sheriffs or whoever else ... to go door to door," said county board member Grant Eckhoff, a Republican from Wheaton. "It's either answer the 911 calls and do the job that he's been doing, or go door to door." ..."

What a crazy argument.   "Uphold state law while breaking your oath to the US constitution" = good.   "ignore state law while upholding US constitution" = bad.  How about look to the people who put the state police into this conundrum?

Its not about facts, never has been about facts. Its about seizing that sweet juicy power and bringing those ignorant barefoot Drupfpfpfpf voting Rethuglikkkans to heel and kneel before them.

More on Dupage County. Used to be a leave-your-door-unlocked place to live, not no more. I think that if their wishes come to pass, the underlined portion will be true - except it will be the lawmakers that are bringing the lawbreakers here to prey on the weak.

Elmhurst Lawmakers Denounce Sheriff (msn.com)

ELMHURST, IL – Elmhurst area state lawmakers joined 14 colleagues in saying they were angered with Sheriff James Mendrick's approach to the state's new gun law.

Sixteen state lawmakers signed a public letter criticizing DuPage County Sheriff James Mendrick's approach to the state's new gun law.

State Rep. Jenn Ladisch Douglas of Elmhurst and Sen. Suzy Glowiak Hilton of Western Springs, whose district includes Elmhurst, put their names on a public letter criticizing Sheriff James Mendrick.

The state legislature recently enacted a law that banned the sale of "assault" weapons and required legal gun owners to register those they already own.

In a public letter Friday, Mendrick joined most Illinois sheriffs in announcing that he would not check to ensure that legal gun owners register their weapons with the state.

The Republican also said he would not arrest or house law-abiding gun owners solely for noncompliance with the new law, which a Democratic majority passed.

Mendrick said the law, titled "Protect Illinois Communities Act," was a clear violation of the Second Amendment. He said he took an oath to protect people's constitutional rights.

The group of Democratic state lawmakers, though, took exception to Mendrick's argument.

"The Sheriff has no authority to determine the constitutionality of a law – that is up to the courts," they said in the letter. "Nor can he pick and choose which laws to enforce: He must enforce them all."

They called the sheriff's approach a "dereliction of duty."

"The Sheriff's words send a clear message that lawbreakers are welcome here," the lawmakers said.

A sheriff's spokeswoman did not return messages for comment.

Well Jenn and Suzy can yell all they want but it won't change the situation. They are wrong and the Sheriff is right. The sheriff is sending exactly the opposite message than "lawbreakers are welcome here". He is saying the population is armed and prepared to defend their lives and property in his county so the "lawbreakers" had better stay away. These women are too stupid to see how the real world works.

Perhaps tin foil hat,  but politicians calling AR-15's "automatic" weapons  may not be the mistake or ignorance of firearms we all think it is, the scarrier they can make them to the non gun owning public the easier it is to ban. AR stands for automatic rifle lol

Someone asked me why I need an AR and I asked them why they are ale to ask that question

Wow twitter sure lit up the Kane County  reps for their legislative malpractice

So according to committee the Sheriff has no first amendment right to free speech either.

It appears McCombie will be quite an improvement over the previous placeholder.
