Illinois General Assembly 1/8/2023

My initial reaction was that the Dem bosses wanted some backroom time to work over the senators they were worried about on the gun ban.

If it was a slam dunk I tend to think they'd go for the score as soon as they could.  I have this sneaky, proof-free feeling that Pritzker has a press day set up for Tuesday to bask in the signing.

Can't say why I think that but it's a notion.

I am still shocked about today. The Senate bill was a pretty standard AWB, and still represented a broad sweeping gun ban (clearly impermissible under Bruen); and even that wasn’t enough for gun control groups and elicited a veto threat from Pritzker. The goal posts keep moving and it illustrates why compromise is impossible here.

JB Pritzger would love to sign a gun grabbing bill BEFORE his second term starts, would make a great blustering point for his further political ambitions.

Granted  reality and Bruen and 25 constitutional carry states have hollowed out that bluster - EXCEPT in JB's mind.

It's never been about guns. It's about control. The antis showed their true colors, if they can't make every gun owner a felon, they're not interested in your bill. They have never been as transparent as they were today. The Senate bill doesn't make existing gun owners instant felons and that was unacceptable.
